And the older gen doesn't understand why people don't stay loyal to companies anymore.

When white people got all the high paying jobs they would get appreciated with watches. Now that minorities dominate the workforce they get bananas.

    Seems racist.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

that's management culture in america. this could just as easily be describing a call center, or a retail store.
Oh I agree. Which is why I think turning schools into a business was the worst idea ever. This is where we messed up in education. While I am all behind making sure a kid gets a equal opportunity in education as the next one, if said kid doesn't utilize that opportunity, that's on them (and their parents). And don't get me wrong, I am down with offering support and services, but again, it should not be our fault if they won't take it.

I know it sounds harsh, but kids parents are not being held responsible for their education at all, and have all the power in their hands to just keep pushing the kid along.

my stepson's done really well. we're proud of him; he's bringing in all A's for the first time.

all of my co-worker's kids, not so much. ages 12-17 and they're all fucking off, in once case not even bothering to log on and get attendance done for most of a month.

we were also very involved and made it clear we weren't going to tolerate him fucking this up, since the bar was set so low. my co-workers...not so much.

I'm fortunate my mom was here for three months. She was able to sit down with my son and get him going. My daughter is a perfectionist so wasn't a concern, but my son is in 1st grade and was wandering off all the time in the spring.

She left on Tuesday to help out with my sister's kids, but fortunately, she trained my son so well he is on top of getting his work done. My husband is starting work later just to keep an eye on him, but it seems easy so far.

Welp working from home for the next week since someone from Thanksgiving popped positive. The person was wearing a mask for most of the time, and would have been like 1 day post-exposure, so hopefully didn't catch anything.

Been working at home since March of this year. Son is high risk and I think between March and now we have had like...10 people pop hot at the Data Center I work at. I am not touching that place until it is safe to do so.

Talked to one of my co-workers and he said even though it's an A/B rotation...half said rotation people aren't wearing their mask at work. Shit is fucking dumb. But then...I've worked with some of those engineers there awhile...not exactly the brightest.

Was supposed to do a drive-by drop off gift for one of my daughter's girl scout mates a week ago. I ended up not making it, and felt super guilty. Was going to drop of the gift this week, and found out the mom has tested positive for Covid. I hope and pray she'll be ok, but I now don't feel so guilty.

Definitely quarantining like crazy these next couple of weeks in general as cases are going up.

Is it common for companies to act that shitty in the states?

I get free coffee, tea and snacks at the office, and free alcohol every Friday, and had the option to work from home whenever I want even before Corona started. We also have company-paid BBQ at lunch now and then during summer, as well as 3 4-day trips every year abroad with paid hotel room, food and alcohol so everyone in the company can meet up and get to know each other better. I love my company and it makes me very loyal.

A lot of companies in Sweden have nice perks outside of the normal 5 week paid vacation and paid parental leave that every company has as a minimum.

Sometimes we'll all crack a beer or take a glass of wine during work and blast loud music and relax, and it's perfectly fine to take a power nap during the day.

In Sweden, we're more of the opinion that people will perform better if they're happy and not stressed than if they dread going to work and stress every day. Which is also why we try to focus on having a healthy work-life balance.

Shitty is probably an understatement. Exceptions exist, of course, but most are just cogs in the capitalist machine.

American companies only goal is to pay people as little as possible, for as much work as they can. Nothing you posted would even cross their minds.

Some tech companies in the US cynically provide good amenities in order to keep the expensive, salaried 20-somethings they employ hanging out at work longer. The basic calculus is that if you pay a dev $150k, then getting them to work 12hr/day vs. 10hr/day is worth $30k/yr. $30k buys a lot of snacks.

My tech company does a shitty version of that and obviously amenities are gone for everyone now that all of tech is WFH. We used to have free happy hours about once every other month. We had snacks that would arrive over the weekend and be gone by Tuesday. We had free bad coffee (unless we were out) and bulk tea. All the water you can drink.

These are the most amenities of any job I have ever had.
