My only, but probably best, amenity is open hours where as long as I work a full week then my schedule is pretty open and I can come in late or early as long as the work is done on time. I gotta makeup the time at some point during that week, but being able to stay late or come in early at will has been so clutch

Have a former colleague working at Zynga now and states they get some good free snacks each day, catered lunch three times a week, WFH when desired and some good coffee. No happy hour, but states their managers used to go to various bars on Friday after work and pay for food and drink ( within reason) for anyone that went with em.

My company Spectrum : free shitty coffee, no free snacks, won't let you WFH unless its a pandemic, and usually just a pat on the back to say good job...I came from the legacy Time Warner Cable side and man, they treated us better back then.

A lot of companies in Sweden have nice perks outside of the normal 5 week paid vacation and paid parental leave that every company has as a minimum.

Yes, because the only thing that matters in American business is the bottom line and there's little incentive for employee benefits to not be at the top of the "no fucks given" list when administrators can pay themselves whatever they want to.

Old owner had an annual luncheon for the company anniversary and an annual Christmas party. He also awarded loyalty for 20 year tenures with a vacation to Tahiti (or the cash equivalent of $22.5k USD.)

He also took the entire company on a 3-day cruise to Cabo for the 20th anniversary. Then the 25th anniversary provided employees' families with a 2 night stay at the Grand Californian @ Disneyland along with a cocktail party, an actual party, and a Sunday brunch.

Doesn't happen anymore now that we're part of the huge multinational publicly traded corporation and all that's talked about is lean manufacturing to save every penny possible. Ok we still have Christmas parties but nothing as baller as when we were private.

Lately I have been having a strange new genre of nightmare where shit is happening normally and all of a sudden I realize no one is wearing masks / it turns into a nightmare. I have never been more convinced that dreams are basically brain-noise and not some subconscious achktually I needed to pee stuff. My brain is just firing randomly and I have a lot more memories of people not wearing masks than wearing them, resulting in an experience that wakes me up. Happens maybe once a week.

Not COVID-related, but I've been on pain meds for a couple years now so I get some real fucked up nightmares sometimes. The first narcotic-induced nightmare I remember having was of a bunch of headless giraffes drinking out of a lake. Like... their heads were gone, so it was just their tongues coming up out of the neck stumps. Also the first time I remember waking up from a dream already in tears.

More recently I had one where I was being hunted by some monstrosity. I don't even remember what it looked like, just that it was the most horrible thing I'd ever seen. I watched the people around me get picked off one by one and ran in terror with full knowledge that I was being toyed with before it was my turn.

I hate my pain meds.

For America to supposedly be the best country in the world and a global leader, we're pretty much last in every positive metric rating a citizen's quality of life of the major first world countries. They want you to go to a third world country thats been pillaged by a super power for decades to centuries. If you're comparing living with a dad that beats you only twice a week vs one that beats you 5 days a week, there's obviously a better choice but they're both still shit options.

100% this. We fool ourselves into thinking this country is amazing when 99% of us are too poor to get any shit. We lie to ourselves about Canadian healthcare and how there are "Oh so many long wait times and people die waiting on basic services! NOT LIKE THE US!!" which is not true at all, and we have longer wait times anyways in terms of having your doctor forward a referral to someone else who refers you to some medicine then insurance asks for the entire process to start all over again. We also lie to ourselves about "oh the scandinavian countries have just crazy high tax rates! I'd rather keep my money!" while not remembering that when someone whos up for emergency care without insurance they have to be seen, then they can't pay so that money gets forwarded back onto us when they hike up rates for insurance/hospital procedures so there's our 'tax'

Already told my wife if I was able to land a job in the EU like Sweden, Germany, etc. I would take it in heartbeat and leave the US behind. Have friends that live in those countries and overall seem to have a much better workplace life balance and life in general.

CDC updated their quarantine guidelines yesterday.

Now, instead of the standard 14-day quarantine it has been recommending, the CDC says that potential exposure warrants a quarantine of 10 or seven days, depending on one's test results and symptoms.

If individuals do not develop symptoms, they need only quarantine for 10 days; if they test negative, that period can be reduced to just one week.

"Reducing the length of quarantine may make it easier for people to take this critical public health action by reducing the economic hardship associated with a longer period, especially if they cannot work during that time," Dr. Henry Walke, the CDC's incident manager for its COVID-19 response, told reporters on a conference call Wednesday.

"In addition, a shorter quarantine period can lessen stress on the public health system and communities, especially when new infections are rapidly rising."

Walke added that people should still watch closely for symptoms — such as fever, a cough or a loss of taste or smell — for a full 14 days after possible exposure.
