FWIW wrt 'cancel culture' while there are obviously people who will try to get people 'canceled' simply for disagreeing, I think that is a (looudly) vocal minority. I think (so I could be wrong) that most rational people are of the opinion that holding whatever shitty opinions is fine, but using your platform to spread them, especially when they are hateful (racism/phobic behavior) or dangerous (anti-mask/vax/etc) is a justifiable reason for employers/advertisers/etc to seek to distance themselves. Also, even more obviously, actual shitty actions/behaviors are deserving of consequences, and I would rather err on the side of making it clear that shit can't continue than let it slide and be repeated. The obvious caveat here is that people do need to be willing to acknowledge people making a sincere effort to fix/atone past mistakes, e.g. how James Gunn basically immediately owned up to his edgelord humor, accepted consequences, and didn't try to play victim or blame others, even though he was literally intentionally targeted. People CAN grow and change, and acknowledging that is important.

I believe in elitism because I believe that the solution is filtering. Either for the ruler or for those eligible to select the ruler. That's how you correct for the problem (people).
