An easy trope that illustrates this is that in every sci-fi or fantasy genre there's really no "racism" between ethnicities of a single race anymore like black vs. white, the racism is always humans vs. aliens or dwarves vs. elves. The granularity with which one discriminates against others is inversely correlated with the size of the social pool.
