Or perhaps it does matter but shit is far more complicated than people would like you to believe because distilling it down to a few talking points and making it black and white satisfies the Karen portion of the brain and allows people to act indignant about it.

I'd rather they didn't increase the phase out at all, but if they had to throw a bone to a few moderates I'm glad they did it out of the upper middle class, instead of the unemployed.

I really wish I could quantify this better than just "anyone who makes under 80k'.

What's the delta on the number of households that make 80k and the upper limit of all households?
What percentage of the population does this affect? Is 70% of America getting help? 55%?

A subtle failure of the Trump administration was the near complete abandonment of documentation and data collection if they didn't like what the end result would be.

I think the current attitudes might change if we knew how many people are getting help vs how much income they reported.
But I also have the depressing thought that it would only change the attitudes of the ones who believe it, since we're already seeing Joe Biden be called a liar just for breathing.

It cuts about 12B from a 1.9T bill, or ~0.6%. It's ~17M people (out of ~325M) who go from receiving a partial payment to no payment. 280 million will still be eligible for a check.

I'd go out on a limb here and say that whomever is affected will still vote R if they had voted R before or vote D if they had voted D before.

I would assume the people who likely would really suffer from getting less/no money on this is likely living in a major city with higher costs of living and thus an area that already leans D

5M of that is children (nonvoters) and the bulk of the 12M are probably parents of those children who are getting other payments out of this bill as well.

I am unaffected by this change and I am sure it saves billions and actually makes policy sense but it is a political black eye.

policy-wise it makes little sense, i am p deficit hawky and saving twelve billion off a two trillion dollar albatross does next to nothing when our deficits are going to be trillion+ for the foreseeable future and there is essentially no political will to put our finances on a more sustainable trajectory.

if the blue dogs needed a political bone it's as fine as any to throw given the checks still go to what, the bottom 86% of American households.

This now seems like a lot of anger for something that doesn't seem like a huge fucking deal breaker.

Looks like the Republicans are going for 'death by a thousand papercuts'. Our system is shit if one party can score wins by fucking over .6% of the population at a time.

then again as we see from the hot and heavy whining in this thread protecting the 86th-90th percentile's right to a partially phased out check means a lot to some people and will decide the course of the next election cycle

Supposedly there's an arcane stupid reconciliation rule reason they maybe needed to trim a little from the bill too.

Also if you are in the phase out, you should dump the max into a traditional IRA for 2020 (which you can still do) before you file your taxes, to reduce your adjusted gross income lower and get more of the benefit.

Also remember that the $600 check phaseout was from $75k to 87k before (not 99k like the original $1200 check) so this is just tightening it a bit further.

It's a narrow slice in the $80k-87k individual filer here.

Is also more of a reason to vote D if you're pissed so that stupid fucking Republicans don't obstruct bills in the future.
