That's incorrect, legally speaking. Many forms of speech have been found to not carry protection under the First Amendment. Furthermore, the protection in and of itself only applies to government restraint of speech.

First amendment jurisprudence is often concerned with whether or not government decisions have a "chilling" effect on a culture of free speech.

Further furthermore, even were it the case that Twitter were a government entity, they still wouldn't be found to be chilling free speech in this specific scenario as words designed to or likely to incite violence are among those not protected by the First Amendment, and that's what Trump got suspended for.

I don’t know, I read the transcript, he very specifically said Peaceful Protest. The fact that some idiots decided to act in a way that we all disagree with shouldn’t be on him. Just like Facebook/Twitter doesn’t take responsibility for everything people post.

But there's a very simple solution to serving politicians fearing they're being censored. The government can create their own social media hub.

Do you mean his speech to the crowd, where he told them to march to the Capitol and that they would cheer on their legislators, but not all.of them because we can only take the country back through strength?

Even ignoring that, you can't view Trump in a vacuum. Twitter made a judgment call - his tweets incited violence and the tweets he made immediately after being unbanned, when taken in the context of everything else, furthered that incitement. He spent 5 years building to this moment.

I get that, but why should Twitter get to decide that? I get it’s a private company, but it’s more than that. It’s a megaphone for the most powerful people on the planet. There should be much more oversight to ensure our rights as Americans don’t get watered down over the years.

It's also a weird thing to be arguing in the first place because 44 previous Presidents were able to communicate with the public just fine whenever they wanted without social media.

They didn't also spend the entirety of their time in office attempting to chill free speech from the media and alienating their bases from the usual means by which they would receive said communications.

The flip side of the coin is that we should feel lucky to live in a country where private business has such freedom of control over their services that they can refuse even the leader of the nation if they break the contractual terms of use.

The free market solution says what we really need are more social media networks to rival Twitter, but none have been able to capture the market like it has.
