On this kind of stuff only invest money that you would be ok with if it if it burnt in front of you. Not to say it won't hurt to see it burn, but it wouldn't really wreck you.

Yeah I am not touching my 401k I am very clear that this would only be using money that I could burn and not care about. I mostly was musing whether or not I needed additional long term investments over my 401k or if that would be enough.

Do you recommend different places for long term vs short term? I have my 401k which is in mutual funds and long term investments. Though I do have it set to be a little bit more aggressive right now. Not sure if I should be doing other long term investments. Mostly this was for short term memes to see if I can get lucky.

A lot of your funds are probably targeted, so if you aren't retiring until 2050 they will be aggressive now and as it gets closer to 2050 become far less aggressive. This is mostly handled for you. I don't know your specifics, but the "next step" is to open a ROTH or standard IRA and max it out each year. Make sure you're at least contributing enough to equal whatever your employer will match on the 401k before anything.

Yeah that is my plan and how I have been setting up my 401k so far. I changed jobs so I have to set up a new 401k. I didn't transfer my last one yet but I am not sure that I will since the balance is high enough I don't need to. My wife and I don't quite have enough funds to put extra into a ROTH or standard IRA each year yet with three kids. My wife does have an IRA that we put money into each year though.

It's already higher than pre-pandemic, but it was at around 35 within the past few years. Most of the investment tools allow you to sort by 5Y or All time on stocks to see the full range of prices throughout history.
