"Pay servers a livable wage, stop relying on patrons to pay your workers" is a pretty cut and dry statement. Unless you're implying $30/hr is not a livable wage for some reason. According to MIT, the minimum livable wage in Colorado is $20.25 (1 adult no children working 40 hours a week).

I already know what you're gonna say: "They dont work 40 hours a week". $20.25 in a 40 hour work week is $810. A 32 hour work week needs $25.31/hr to meet that quota. 27 hours a week at $30/hour is exactly $810. But 27 hours a week doesnt even qualify as a full time job.

With tips, working a small Italian restaurant almost a decade ago, I was averaging a little less than that per hour in Florida. Thing is, that's after tipping out the bus boys and dishwashers with my own tip money; the justification from ownership being that if that staff weren't helping me then I'd have to do the work and I'd flip tables slower and make less money. This is a very common practice. Without that, I'd make 35+/hr easy, and that's in cash so you aren't paying taxes on it.

It really depends on the circumstances. If they get $30/hr on paper and still have to tip out the help, I'd be pissed too, but y'all don't care about nuance

Did they specify full time? Cause most servers are part time making a killing in the few hours of evening service on the weekends. Strong doubt this is 30/hr and they're giving them 40/hrs a week. Most kitchen staff don't even make that much

North American culture has become so ingrained with tipping being a standard that they were probably worried customers would feel ashamed to not tip.

Tips should absolutely be removed. Not only is this practice in the industry rooted in post slavery discrimination, but it turns the optional into mandatory. It is abused by employers to obfuscate and push their costs off onto others. Warps the attitude of society overall on the practice.

I mean, people should be free to tip if they want. The problem isn't tipping, it's companies being allowed to supplant paying a living wage, much the same way they now basically put "leave a tip" on every stupid retail screen like you need to tip someone for scanning your items.

It's not my job to pay your workers, but I should be free to tip them extra if I want to.

Tipping becomes the problem because of the system it gets built into. It needs to be removed from the culture. Wanting to give something or a little extra isn't tipping. It just gets thrown around like it is the same thing.

That's literally what tipping is, so it is the same thing.

I completely agree it should be removed from culture, but telling people they can't choose to be generous is silly. Like with most things, it started out with the idea that if someone liked your work they could show appreciation it's since ballooned into "to show our appreciation we're throwing you a pizza party" in place of actual compensation.

The cultural problem is that we've normalized overworking and undercompensation. Modern tipping is just natural progression of that mentality, similar to "would you like to donate 1$ to prevent beaten kids from being homeless".

I'm just happy my retirement account is back on track. Up 32.6% as of today (this year). If i track the hit i took during COVID it is near the 11% year over year so i'm back on track from the losses during that time.

Damn, mines up around 18% on the year, but around 90% of my portfolio is VITSX. Year over year is around 12%.

Yeah, I started putting into deferred comp in 2021, and finally back to up 12% from start date. This year I think mine is up like 30% so far.

But also had one hell of a head start since the old owner protected his employees' profit sharing by shoving it into everyone's 401k prior to selling the company back in late 2012. So I got $80k extra into my 401k through what I assume was a loophole on employer 401k contributions.
