Copyright law has always been enforced retrospectively by the copyright holders and almost always results in a settlement (paying for the usage) instead of some kind of forbidding of usage/release.

So it is likely that these content providers will get paid (probably less than they are owed) if they bring a sufficiently large class action suit and have good evidence that their content was used to train the model (like GPT4 spitting out full pages of Harry Potter), but it is unlikely that they would take the model down. AI is here to stay and the smaller the player the more likely they will not get paid for their pilfered content.

I don't love it, but I am also not delusional.

For instance, it is patently ridiculous to think that OpenAI didn't train on Reddit. Apple is proactively licensing the content (paying to be able to train on it), but OpenAI is probably going to get sued and still pay to be able to have trained on it.

The best argument for this is that it is logistically impossible to contact all the copyright holders and secure permission before using the work, so the project is only viable if you get them to come to you.

Over the next three years. 600 Family Dollar stores this year and an additional 370 plus 30 Dollar Trees over the next two years. This makes up 12% of their total market.

On Wednesday, Dollar Tree said that it would record a $950 million impairment against the trade name Family Dollar, on top of a $1.07 billion goodwill charge. Family Dollar will spend more than $594 million closing or rebranding stores, essentially erasing profits from the holiday season.

For the three months ended Feb. 3, Dollar Tree lost $1.71 billion, or $7.85 per share. A year earlier the Chesapeake, Virginia, company earned $452.2 million, or $2.04 per share.

Those stores suck anyway. Needed some laundry detergent late night and I didn't feel like driving an extra couple blocks to the CVS, so I went to Family Dollar instead. It looked like a tornado ran through it and there was only one cashier available. Not to mention that while everything is cheap, the amount of product you get is actually a scam and hella predatory. Buying something at a normal store gives you more bang for buck. I think John Oliver did an episode on this too.

I work with a former Dollar Tree manager and she told me that the company only schedules one cashier and one lead per shift.

This is the truth. We have some around here and I heard from someone in the know that one had to close cause people were robbing them blind. I'm not talking about with a gun or anything either. They would just walk in the store with a huge bag, stuff it with as much as they can, and walk out. This happened on a DAILY basis.
