I find myself more cynically inclined as while we do have it back for now, even when we had it before, it didn't really inhibit ISPs from establishing soft monopolies or doing their utmost foot dragging to better the internet infrastructure of non-urban areas. Which unironically feeds into some of the love Elon has because they view Starlink as him "listening" even if it is overpriced and has its own issues. This also does nothing to address banking flexing its own censorship over the internet by refusing to work with individuals that aren't doing anything illegal, but otherwise don't fall within their wholesome religious brainwashing umbrella as a Gay Wedding Cake On Crack-ism. Which, frankly, justifies an extension of what net neutrality should be.

There needs to be new regulations on payment processors restricting their ability to deny services.

I mean I **AM** jaded, which is precisely why I'm a neolib.

I have adjusted my calibration of what improvements I think are possible and I prioritize the durability of those improvements over "actual change" because fighting on the margins is the limits of what I believe is achievable. Being Hobbesian is how I live with the reality that government is a feeble attempt to escape our terrible nature where most of us would murder each other if it was the optimal choice.

Why be Hobbesian when you can be Calvinian?

(Yes I realize the name was a tribute to Thomas Hobbes)

I'm just saying I'm real open to dying in my late 40s to avoid having to live in this world post societal collapse.

I get it, everyone's situation is different, but seriously, fuck dude, life isn't all that bad, especially if you're living in the US or any first-world country. It's one thing to feel disillusioned, but taking it to that extreme is another matter entirely.

There are definitely things that are going wrong right now but so much more is going right and I am excited to live out my life and for my kids to. I can't be a pessimist as a parent. I have to believe that things will continue to get better. I think the jaded feeling can be really distilled down to the state of the housing market, the state of politics *specifically the GOP*, and the state of healthcare including reproductive rights and health insurance costs. I am sure there are more things to list and there are things going on in the world that are not good at all but I can be aware of those things and hope they get better without letting it get me down to the point of hoping for non existence.

I mean, life can certainly seem good if you don't get sick, aren't gay, or happen to be a man. Watching every little thing erode away is the demoralizing part and the boomers pulling the ladders up behind them really exacerbates a lot of issues like housing. The whole "Fuck you, I got mine!" nature of a lot of GOP policies is exactly why some people are so fucking depressed and disenfranchised because telling them "It's not THAT bad..." is placebo at best and downplaying their situation at worst.

I mean it's terrible in many respects, but the modern world is also the best it's ever been for anyone who's a minority since before cross cultural contact created the knowledge of differences to oppress each other over (whereas before that it was simple economic oppression)

We're all predestined to be fucked because we weren't born as rich white men, or attractive enough women to con money out of loser guys?

    By Jennifer Elias, CNBC

Just ahead of its blowout first-quarter earnings report on April 25, Google laid off at least 200 employees from its “Core” teams, in a reorganization that will include moving some roles to India and Mexico, CNBC has learned.

The Core unit is responsible for building the technical foundation behind the company’s flagship products and for protecting users’ online safety, according to Google’s website. Core teams include key technical units from information technology, its Python developer team, technical infrastructure, security foundation, app platforms, core developers, and various engineering roles.

The circle of concern and circle of influence concepts helps at classifying things happening in life. Being sick (whether it is you ,family), acute housing issues would definitely be circle of influence items that one should spend his energy on. But boomers? current events? voters? In 19th century press figured out the impact of fear on sales/popularity and been exploiting this ever since. Every news is attached with some fear aspect.

It has really been the same shit. Just pull out a random newspaper (NYT has archives back to 1851 I think) from some time in your lifespan. 10 years ago, 20 years ago, 40 years ago or whenever. It's the same crap. Very similar concerns, worries, issues. I am not saying one should completely ignore current events but letting them influence you to the point that you spend most of your energy on? That's not the right mentality.

Life can be tough, things can be difficult but the only correct way to navigate through these periods is on focus on the right thing. I personally stopped checking news throughout the day. Read reputable outlets for 5 minutes in the morning and done. Actively filter the instilled fear on them. No, the society will not collapse anytime soon. No, there won't be a Great Depression in the immediate future. If for some reason they happen I'll think about it then. We spent each day of 2022 anticipating the recession that didn't happen. My response to twitters motto, "happening now." is "I don't care". It's OK to raise your voice against inequalities, it's OK to aid those in need, these are deliberate actions that actually do something. But beyond those, we've got limited time, limited energy. Constantly spending these unrecoverable resources on circle of concern items means we are depriving important things in our life, like our children, loved ones, or career of them.

I just help my community as best I can. Usually by shitposting against NIMBYs under pseudonyms in our local papers (only kinda kidding). Local stuff is way more rewarding tbh, national/supranational politicking is just TV. I think I've mentioned it before but my wife went to HS with a major local politician here and we know a few other folks who are pretty involved in the town/county level stuff. I've helped out with some town stuff with zoning and having someone stop you at the store and be like "hey fam, thanks for that." is a major warm feeling. The best is when a grumpy old person is mad at you but also respects that you're actually in the process. They get so tied up on how to feel.

I could run for a local position of some kind but if I get a job in Boston I won't be able to commit the time needed and that's not fair to folks who can.
