My friend and former coworker got offered $200k+ per year and her MS and PhD paid for. Likely going to pass on it since it would require living in SF for more than 7-10 years, doesn't like SF and I don't see her as the person who would settle in one place for more than 3 years.

Rent in San Fran is at something like 3k a month for a 2 BR. 200k is livable there

Not really. Astylla and I live about 20 miles outside San Francisco where rent is slightly more affordable, but not by much (average around here is 2500-3k) and we combined gross about 140k a year and live comfortably. Basically, good enough to afford rent, but extremely difficult to buy in this shitty housing market.

it's not only 'livable' you're doing better than the overwhelming majority of Americans. cost of living is higher than average but it ain't like an In n Out burger in the Bay costs forty five dollars. shit and this lady was also grabbing tens of thousand a year in non-direct compensation having her PhD taken care of. like Melena say you might be fucked re buying a house without a partner bringing in a second paycheck but still hitting that 1% standard of living of all human beings on the planet.

I offered someone 190k a year the other day for a basically entry level job and got turned down.

What job is this? Can it be a remote job?

Edit: saw it is a data center job. Darn and in Maryland. I wish I could find something like that remote.
