Yeah it's often (usually?) the case that it's cheaper to buy an existing building and convert it into low income housing than it is to build a new one, because of all the strings attached to the funding.

Even then it gets tough. Bringing an existing building up to code can be cumbersome, and if you're in a historic district you may have to work alongside Landmarks agencies.

Spicy's wish for revamped shopping centers is great, but do less (not zero) open space and more dense urban planning around them. They are incredibly difficult to get off the ground without buy-in from several institutions ready for move-in (thinking grocery, bank, pharmacies, then later libraries, civic offices, and finally basic retail). If you want people to move to these typically isolated locations you better have the amenities or access to them nearby.

I lived for probably a month or two once in a hotel that was connected to a shopping mall and it was great. I was 15 at the time but I have fond memories.

That's the unfortunate part. Green spaces are important to the well-being of a society. It shouldn't be any different than infrastructure as it is a part of city planning. Which would mean existing without strict private capital.

Again I didn't say no green space, but too much is a bad thing. It's mid century modern urban renewal shit that ruined communities and continues to do so.

I'm not advocating making manicured parks all over the urban hellscape. Just that more green spaces are needed than the average American city landscape contains, and shouldn't at the mercy of private finance. That, and I hate malls.

I recall Archie getting a few of us on the up and up with I Bonds earlier this year as inflation first hit. I already dumped the max 10k in, but it should also get affected by the new rate.

Iirc you can also buy another 10k gift i-bond and choose not to deliver it, so it will sit in your account and accrue interest but not count against your annual 10k (eventually counts against for the recipient when delivered).

My wife and I got in on this for 40k total quite a few months ago. When inflation goes down, we will deliver the bonds to each other for our 10k limit that year. Seems like was a good financial idea in general.

Perhaps we're attempting to acknowledge that paying people living wages isn't the cause of inflation and that corporate greed, alongside selective rationing to bolster artificial scarcity, might be the cause.
