FMA is much stronger in terms of character development and this includes shou tucker. FMAB feels like a watered down version of FMA up until the back half as it had the finished manga to follow by that point and FMA veered off after episode 20 to create it's own story which wasn't resolved very well.

FMA is much more character centric, FMAB more plot centric. the best way to view would be at least watching the first 20 episodes of FMA then going on to FMAB but alas dated animation and FMAB being true to the manga makes it so people only ever see FMAB and if they do go back to view FMA end up feeling like they are watching a slower version of FMAB with the cliffnotes already known.

arakawa preferred how the 2003 version villains and homunculi were done and personally chose to change some things when brotherhood was made to be different from her manga as a result of fan reactions to 2003. such as

mae hughes barely even being a person in the manga before his death but him being a fan favorite in FMA leading to him being given alot more screentime in brotherhood. he was never even in isvhal in the manga
