For a round-trip bedroom reservation, that sounds about right for an overnight sleeper experience. Roomette obviously cheaper. I'd say you're better off going for max vacation mode and do Seattle/Portland > LA/Oakland(SF) (or reverse) and enjoy the scenery through the Cascades.

I been thinking about trying the brightline trains for a day trip down to Miami sometime. Supposedly they get you from Orlando to Miami in 3-4 hours. Also interested to see if we kill anyone. They’ve been nicknamed the murder trains because so many people have been killed by them in the last two years or so since they opened.

If you have a car, the brightline (and any Florida rail service) is absolute dog shit and not worth it. It always ends up being more money than just driving yourself, parking included. I really want to like it, especially for South Miami traveling, but it's just a waste of time and money if your car can survive the trip

It's insane that trains cost this much in the US. There's no excuse for it. UK is dogshit at trains too, but not the sleepers. Same on the continent. It's fucking criminal. I firmly believe railways should be owned by the government with stations owned by local governments. Actually make it so companies can compete on the same tracks.

Traffic sucks anywhere in the world. Everyone has a really well working gps app on their phone. Not worth -paying more- to sit on an uncomfortable, and sometimes smelly, train just to get close to your destination, then wait for the free (sometimes) ride share car to take you to your actual destination. It's just a wtf? situation clearly designed and priced for people who can't afford/obtain a vehicle

The shit that’s annoying about Amtrak is that it forces you to rent two sleepers for a family of four even when the two are small children below seven years old.

So the default right off the bat is twice the price.
