A large number of heterosexual relationships are built on a zero-sum game with insecurity, fear of being alone and contentment mixed with resentment dictating the rules. Many men will marry the just the current woman theyre dating because of feeling obligatedand still want to sleep with/see other women but lose their minds if she were to sleep with another man. These are the men that dont view women as people but property instead and treat them like things to be won and conquered.
There are women that will stay with a man because of the sunken cost fallacy and then end up marrying him because they're too afraid to be alone or think it's what's best for the kids. They fear any other women because of the idea he would leave her for the new woman. Like no one secure in their relationship is loudly and proudly jealous or will gleefully talk about the ways theyre abusive to their partners.
These are all roles straight folks put themselves in and will uphold even though theyre in relationships where they hate how it's structured but won't say anything until it's a life shattering revelation.
Like with Meg and Klay he could've told her from the beginning he didnt do monogamy but instead he cheated on her after buying her a Bentley and then a house with her.

Only subject yourself to that with the person you're raising children with. In which case the stability is crucial and necessary.
