I adored DMC3's gimmick where the bosses turned into weapons after you beat them. Man that game was such a redemption arc after 2. If God of War 2 didn't exist then DMC3 would be the best of its genre on the PS2.

As long as it's not 2 or DmC (the Ninja Theory one) you'd be fine. Even then DmC isn't a bad game, it's just a bad Devil May Cry game. Just don't play 2, never play 2

3 Special Edition and 5 are generally considered the best.

I recommend playing 2 because it takes like an hour to beat and makes you appreciate 1 and 3 so much more because of how terrible it is.
