Going by "value to the shell" I definitely didn't deserve it since I wasn't ever on PLD or NIN and was stuck on WHM 24/7.

But I did in fact camp more than all of the PLDs (it dropped on a 3AM KB, and I was one of eight people online), and panda even admitted that I tanked well (for my level of gear -- no Ochain or Aegis) the few times I did go PLD

I framed it as a bday gift to myself, strangely it worked! I did go back for a little bit of Abyssea on a different character, but at the risking of sounding like Gred, the changes to the game did not jive with my nostalgia so I gave it up again.

There was a similar curse in my shell with relics. Someone quit along the way and gave me their leftover dyna currency so I could finish my relic. But I caught myself and quit before finishing my Amano because at that point in the game, I was like "wtf am I gonna use this for? I already killed and low-manned all the hard shit". Luckily, I had only done the first step and just held onto the currency for the rest of the steps. Gave it to my friend, quit, and he finished off his MNK relic (who then quit a couple months later lmao).

A lot of that shit has a "Ok checkbox ticked. Now what?" aspect to it so it makes sense.

The need to have goals to work towards is a problem a lot of MMOs fail to solve. XI did eventually incorporate super mega hard difficult battles called Master Trials, kinda similar to Ultimates in XIV. One of them took over two years before a group cleared it. I’m not talking about PW level throwing bodies at it for 18 hours, they are one hour instanced battles.

Like my shoe game isn't *that* strong but goddamn he didn't have to murder me.

I quit because there was no one else to do Einherjar with and I just stopped having time to get up at 2 in the morning for a raid I was 10th in line to benefit from. Priorities change y'all.

I quit originally because I kept leaving for a few months at a time (or several years, between WotG and SoA) and after a point every time I returned there were fewer and fewer people I played with still around.

This is a fundamentally different mindset from what it takes to enjoy and thrive at Kings.

The point is to dominate claims. Crush your opponents' chance of getting their gear, see their shells driven to disbandment, and hear the lamentations of their mothers. THAT is when you feel satisfaction.

The vikings had a word for this. They called it Valhalla. Endless war. Endless combat. Knowing only victory and death. Bathing in the blood of your enemies. You get your Adaberk and Ridill and think: what should I do now? Should I retire and get on in life?

But there is only one option. There is only ever one option. To repeat the cycle. Various cultures have alternatively described this loop as their vision of Heaven or Hell. It is both.
