It also depends on how you want to count it.

First ANIME anime - Genesis Survivor Gaiarth, subbed tapes from Blockbuster
First anime - Ronin Warriors, TV dubbed broadcast (followed by Sailor Moon & Samurai Pizza Cats)
First animated in Japan and passed off as domestic - Transformers (plus The Last Unicorn & Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland)

You do yourself a disservice sir.

Sticking to film, you should look into the works of
Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika)
Mamoru Hosoda (The Girl Who Lept Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children)
and Makoto Shinkai (5 Centimeters per Second, The Garden of Words, Your Name)

    Also
Steamboy (from the person who made Akira)
Jin-Roh (written by the director of Ghost in the Shell)
    Redline
    Blood: The Last Vampire

And it's not exactly a recommendation, but the film Roujin Z is is a work where a LOT of the people who made the films above worked together. (Also the Patlabor franchise, and the segment Magnetic Rose from Memories.)

I remember seeing Nausica: Valley of the Wind as a kid and then much later flipping out when they re-released it with some major Hollywood stars doing the English dub

Good anime is incredibly hard to find nowadays when you have to sift through mountains of isekai slop.

id say steamboy and redline are pretty weak ngl, honestly for non anime watchers only thing here you could reliably rec is satoshi's movies

I'll admit Steamboy is not as strong a film as Akira.
And Redline is a bit of an animators film to be fair, it's one of the last few majority traditionally hand drawn anime.

It costs about 2.5mil dollars to produce a season of anime and you need all that money upfront. A lot of studios will greenlight shows western audiences will watch to help fund their lesser projects that may not be as profitable. So if you want better anime start buying the mangas, merchandise and one shots.

People that say there's no good "shows/music/movies" etc are incredibly lazy. Like you can easily type in media you like for recommendations from all over the world. Hell all these streaming services have a recommended page based off things you train your algorithm with.

Most anime is not gripping me, but it's fun to watch anyways.

Anyways, Ted Lasso is pretty good

I don't trust algo recs, so much of what is wrong with youtube/twitter/tiktok/insta/etc. is due to the existence of the algo.

And Xno isn't wrong about having to sift through mountains (and it's not just anime, but games too).

    Examples
1985 - 17 TV Shows - Standouts: Zeta Gundam, Dancougar, Transformers, Dirty Pair
2005 - 110 TV Shows - Standouts: Ah! My Goddess, Air, Emma, Aquarion, Eureka Seven, Hell Girl, Aria, Mushishi
2025 - 264 TV Shows - Standouts: Sakamoto Days, The Summer Hikaru Died, Secrets of the Silent Witch, Apothecary Diaries S2, Solo Leveling S2, Grand Blue S2, Dandadan S2, Kingdom S6, Spy x Family S3, My Hero Academia final season.

The amount of good anime has slowly risen over the years, but the amount of total anime has become exponential.

im very judgemental for anime but i love so so so many manga. most i like aren't adapted and the ones i do i feel lose a lot in the transition. an obvious example is the nausicaa movie vs the manga which is just fundamentally different
