Went to hospital ten days ago for abdominal pain. Gastro doctor detected large ulcer and hole in his stomach. Surgery was done to patch the hole. While in surgery, they found a large mass near his femoral artery they said was buried deep and never would have shown up on an endoscopy or colonoscopy. They were very confident the mass was lymphoma but did not do a biopsy as he had already been in surgery for a long time. He spent several days in ICU post surgery before being moved into a regular recovery room. They ordered CT scans due to the mass, and found another mass on his brain which they also suspect to be lymphoma. Confirmed diagnosis of congestive heart failure. He has not been able to eat or drink since the surgery, every time he tries he begins coughing for hours unable to get anything back up, so he's been getting nutrition via PIC line and IV. He failed a swallow test. Basically a flap in his esophagus is not closing properly and so all food/drinks are going to his lungs rather than the stomach. My father was a CNA for 30+ years, he has seen what feeding tubes entail and has adamantly refused a feeding tube. Mom is having conversations with him to make sure he understands--if he cannot swallow, and refuses a feeding tube, he is going to slowly starve to death. This is essentially also how my grandfather died, couldn't swallow and refused the tube and slowly wasted away. Between the CHF and lymphoma, and his age (77), doctors are not recommending further surgery, even a biopsy, and father is adamantly stating he doesn't want them done. He's starting to lose his ability to form sentences and speech is slurred. Originally we thought it was from the intubation tube irritation post surgery but now the more likely answer is the brain edema. Just a few days ago we were looking into rehab facilities so he could get stronger after the surgery and eventually go home. Now we're looking at nursing homes and hospice care. He's remarkably calm about all of it, probably considering his long medical career himself. I think he's just ready to check out. Fucking sucks.
