Going to visit a coworker in the hospital who had a seizure in my lab room last week. Called the info desk about visiting. She doesn't remember my name but her mom says it's okay to visit.
Fuck this is potentially going to suck.

Someone somehow (details are fuzzy) let a propane tank for their camp stove get too close to their illegal campfire where they were camping on the hill across from where I live. The tank exploded starting a fire that is now 800+ acres. My house is enveloped in smoke and we are watching the orange glow of the fire get closer each day. I fucking hate irresponsible campers. Of all the major fires in this area during my life most of them have been either arson or accidental starts from campers.
It is in the back country now so this fire is going to be burning until it rains.
I hope you and your family will stay safe.
So it's my PTO day. Coworker's aunt asked me to grab her bag at work so her husband can pick it up from my home. I got stopped by management, pulled into a conference room, then was told not to tell any details of my coworker's condition beyond what was told despite it being my fucking day off. So sent to the group text message that we are not to discuss the situation at work anymore. Only in personal text messages or offsite. It's like my coworker shouldn't exist.
So facilities senior manager said to please wait until corporate lawyers will allow you to leave with the bag. Leaves the room to talk with them on the phone. Comes back about 10-15 minutes later with a hard "No" and i would need to email corporate with an official request on behalf of the family. Called coworker's aunt and said the father will pick it up then. Facilities manager has to get on the phone with corporate again for that request. Finally that was approved. So fucker has to drive from SCV to the west SFV (you LA people know how much this drive sucks) instead of just letting me resolve this.
Like I get it. The company doesn't want to get sued. But ffs we can't be human and do small things to help the family? fuck you corporate overlords. I even picked up her earbuds before the visit and her aunt really appreciated that. Disinfected it too! And I got some admonishment for that act of kindness.
because I went on site to grab some belongings at the request of the family. BTW the family is pretty pissed at how stonewalled they have been by corporate. and it doesn't help our ditzy onsite HR generalist is constantly unavailable to help anyone through this shit.
Thanks. The evacuation warnings are getting closer and closer. There are so many fires on the west coast right now they don't have the resources to fight the fire effectively. It is in such a harsh area that it requires air support. I am hoping we don't have to evacuate. We have a pool and water pumps and lots of fire hose.
