Oh, my bad. I sometimes forget that the Dems were just voting to be Republicans that don't care what goes on in the bedroom or at the doctor's office. In other words—you know—assholes. What a great deal. Sign me up. That whole 40 hour work week, medicare,
college without debt, or social security of the left is undesirable.

The insistence on "viability" is so baffling. Are their ideas and beliefs not preferable? Do you not like them? Otherwise, they aren't an avocado plant being planted in the Tundra.
With the constant defeatism already—madone. It's not about "they will never win" they win when people don't give up on them as an impossibility. Then when they do in spite of it all and people like this it becomes a back pedal to "well, they are only able to win there then." Do you want it or not?

I like far left Ideas but I have the self awareness to understand that most people don't. There was a great poll posted somewhere on BG awhile back showing that most far left ideas are just not favored by a majority voters. You desperately need to understand that letting the Right win makes it harder for the far left to win when the older generations die out and those ideas are no longer costing dems elections.

Which ideas? Medicare for all? Legal weed? Decriminalizing drugs? Workers being represented on corporate boards? Worker ownership of factories, warehouses, etc? Barring government officials from insider trading or "retiring" to become lobbyists? Government production and distribution of insulin and other life essential drugs rather than letting the profit motive kill people? State funded mental health services? Maternity and paternity leave?

There are a lot of ideas I can randomly spout out, but things like Medicare for All, legal weed, gay marriage, abortion, social security, the GI Bill or VA, affordable drugs, etc all have majority support nationally. What happens though is those with financial interest poison the well and lie and manipulate people into fearing that they will just have to "foot the bill" for all of it as if they aren't paying taxes already or that "lazy people" and/or immigrants are going to take advantage of them. Meanwhile, gig workers are being exploited with no security or stability to their lives. As the well is once again poisoned that they need to have a "grindset" in order to get ahead rather than they are being fucked. It is a constant sort of theme, but I digress. Most people don't understand the effects of programs or how they spend more money not funding them than actually funding them.

So what desperately needs to be understood is that the Dems form a bulwark from people actually moving left. They don't serve the voter over financial interests, they mislead the discourse with bullshit talking points, and intentionally create ineffective legislation or campaign on minor concessions that everyone thinks is actual progress rather than placation. While voters are left completely devoid on average of understanding what is in their own personal interests or how things even work. Dems are the equivalent of going to HR because you overworked and stressed and hoping they do something for you because no one else is.

I don't believe that being an accelerationist—one who wants to make things worse to bring about radical change—is a wise or viable play. However, I will not be voting for those that I do not believe in. Which is not a matter of minor disagreements or demanding perfection, but over general ideology and red lines.
The insistence around here that not voting for most Dems is equivalent to voting for Republicans, and that people like this are the problem. Is entirely ignorant, and that is putting it mildly.

Popular support among who because a lot of people that support those things are people like you who don't vote.

Are you talking about the poll I posted where a hard conservative position was compared to relatively modest neoliberal reform and the conservative position won in 6 out of 8 times?

Literally "protect house prices for people who already own property by keeping supply low" beat the affordable housing policy (rezoning, and building more affordable housing units) by 15%.

Yes, the left isn't above the, "Fuck you, I got mine" mentality. They just won't voice it out loud.

That's not always true, but generally it is neither conservative nor liberal to have that mentality it's just human nature.

Carbon tax is the only position the liberal policy won. You could call nuclear energy a push since some progressives hate nuclear irrationally. In the other six instances, it's a center-left neolib policy losing wildly to the right policy.

Calling that survey one on "neoliberal policy" says just about all you need to know. If the surveyor and the surveyed don't understand neoliberalism is about a free market economy which seeks to privatize the public for profit, lower taxes on the wealthy and corporations, cut regulation, cut social programs, etc. Where you are a consumer and not a citizen. Basically, you know, the economic expansionist policy of the US.

Also, the public knows fuck all about the pros and cons of providing housing. Tell people it will reduce their crime, boost their economy, lower rent, generate more tax revenue thus likely leading to lower taxes, increase job ability and retention, etc, and watch that number flip.
You might as well survey first graders on if we should add the fucking moon as the 51st state, and they vote yes. They know fuck all just like this bullshit survey. Which comically enough didn't ask about medicare for all among other subjects.

Taking in refugees is also a matter of international law we signed on to in the wake of the Holocaust. After the US sent fleeing Jews back to Europe to die. Classy as fuck for the 55% surveyed there that don't care.

These people also voted against avocados and all the shit they buy online too. Choosing beggars.

The public knows fuck all about anything. That's the point.

The Dems aren't, and shouldn't, be trying to sell policy. They should be selling an identity of being on the voters' side, the "common" idiot's side. Identity politics is about engendering loyalty among ignorants.

I know you think that's a dunk, but it's not. It proves the public is more rightward than even neoliberalism, which means true progressivism is out of the question.

Oh please, it is a dunk because it shows they know nothing. Their understanding of nuclear power and disaster is from the Simpsons, a plant in an earthquake and tsunami zone, and Chernobyl. Their understanding of trade is that it went away and it is the fault of a scapegoat. Not that neo-liberalism means it gets exported overseas as determined by the profit motive. That doing such creates a deeper interdependency and fragility of the supply chain. Which is one of the root causes of our woes. So in and so forth.

So, i know you think it's a dunk to point out that your own self-interest is all that matters, and that this nonsense survey proves "progressive policy" is a failure. However, you are appealing to ignorance in the voter base as a self-fulfilling prophecy of vindication. Identity politics you espouse only deepen the issues of a democracy that doesn't know it's ass from it's elbow.

To be fair, there is also a lot of skepticism of nuclear power because of three-mile island and our dismal history of nuclear waste disposal. (note: I'm pro-nuclear, just saying)

Next generation tech in the nuclear sector improves the matter. It's not a magic bullet, but it is part of the solution at this time. Besides these assholes don't care about dumping waste as long as it's not near them. In fact doing such lines up with their MO well.
