As I've said before, you're unlikely to see serious competition from a more grassroots West Virginian because they're too utterly fucking poor to politic. Many of the major campaigns have someone with high level ties to fossil fuels or corporate lawyering as candidates. Quite possibly the only hope is someone with legitimate left leanings and wealth moving to WV with the explicit intent of dethroning him (before he dies or goes invalid). But even that's a gamble because the "They're not a true west virginian!" card would be played, among other expected right wing bullshit about socialism/communism.
Some of the ads I was hearing on the radio the past couple days to stoke Manchin to vote no were pretty lulzy. Was like, "I WISH Pelosi and her agenda was socialist..."
