Objection your honor, confounding in that low income families are not likely to be able to reinforce what's learned there versus higher income families.

While I realize that is an argument for increased CTC, it's certainly not an argument against state funded ECE.

I tried to find full access to that paper to read through it because that information seems incomplete. So, just going off the abstract, I'm gonna cover some limitations to the study versus what we know based on years of data collection and current evidence.

1. The information cuts off at sixth grade.
2. It measures only test scores, which let's be real, is not a great way to analyze the benefits of an educational program, especially early intervention programs.

Cognitive and noncognitive abilities are greatly influenced by pre-K. Motivation, emotional regulation, personality shaping, peer interaction are all social determinants for later in life and not well reflected in aptitude and test scores.

There's mountains of data showing that enriching early childhood environments have long term effects into adulthood, including reducing rates of depression, substance abuse, increase work performance, etc.

This study pretty much confirms what many studies had already confirmed, that there is an "IQ fadeout" after a few years. We've known this for a LONG time. Treatment groups in these studies usually show fadeout by age 10. See the Perry program of the 1960s and the Abecedarian program of the 70s. Unlike this study, those studies continued to follow the control groups into adulthood and found that even though the IQ may not be higher, there were a wide range of positive social behaviors including higher education levels, higher earnings, more likely to own a home, less likely to be on welfare, less likely to be incarcerated.

I could go on and on, this was one of my topics going through grad school that I spent a lengthy amount of time studying.

TLDR: the study only measures aptitude, ignores numerous other benefits, and it just confirms what we already knew. The results of the study are neither devastating nor new. It's a salacious tweet by someone not intimately familiar with established research.

Edit: I did find an article write-up fleshing out the findings of the paper a bit more and it indicates that it showed the kids had more behavior issues and more special education referrals, but didn't provide the direct data. The increase in special Ed referrals is in contrast to a lot of comprehensive longitudinal studies that are much longer than the narrow window of 6 or 7 years of this study, I'd be interested in seeing their numbers. If anything, it'd be a blip on the meta-analysis of established research. Again, following these kids for 7 years, having a narrow scope of it's overall affects, and calling it a longitudinal study that decimates current pre-K is an awfully bold characterization that feels more incomplete than definitive.

anyway, the pre-K part of the BBB bill is basically trash anyway (expires in 2028, weird low-dollar phase in in the first 3 years, opt-in that only a few blue states will take up) and that money would be better spent on the CTC expansion
