I don't think so, no. People with delusions aren't stupid or mentally foggy. They can operate with perfect clarity, they just believe something is true that isn't true. Also, what purpose would that serve as a red herring? If anything it would put a plan like this at risk and throws up more potential roadblocks (which I think we can all agree SHOULD have happened in this case).

So you're not wrong, though, in that delusional disorder patients tend to be functioning quite well (until they're not).

I doubt that he was experiencing true hallucinations and just randomly became psychotic thus schizophrenia proper is a way for them to blame this on Caucasian Victim Disorder rather than the fact that he was a deluded human being.

20% of patients with delusional disorder eventually go on to be diagnosed with schizophrenia, but usually because the delusions were a feature and not a bug.
