However it is scary how effective that would be at causing a heck of a lot of chaos along the west coast. If someone were able to disrupt the power grid on the East coast at the same time....

No well-armed citizen stands a ghost of a chance against the military. If the government decided to turn tyrannical there's nothing we could do about it, since we've spent decades voting in people who build bigger and deadlier weapons and dump the excess off on the also-government-controlled police forces. A guy with a house lined with guns is just going to make an explosion deadlier for his neighbors when a bomb blows up his house from 3 miles away.
