Cops are given tremendous power in exchange for tremendous responsibility. I don't care if that responsibility has slowly been eroded away legally. Every one of those officers who didn't go in are cowards. The dead remember.

I'm not in favor of terrorism, and this is big if true, but it's a hot take to advocate for executing police officers for dereliction of duty. Throwing them in prison with the inmates they put away is often enough to teach them a meaningful lesson.

The hard part is putting them there. These cops are definitely scum, but executing them won't teach them anything nor will it being the children they let down back to life.

If anything, they're going to be haunted by the humiliation this week undoubtedly rain on them as the community looks officer Jim in the eye and wonders why the fuck he stood by sanitizing his hands while someone's son was getting shot in the face.

These officers are fucked for life already. Let them live with that fucking guilt. They brought it on themselves.

I believe the sentiment is that punishing them or even letting them be haunted isn't enough. Every other cop in the nation needs to know that this shit isn't cool and that "the union will save me" shouldn't be considered a shield. Not that this is a sentiment exclusive to this incident, but it's still a message that needs to be sent all the same.

While I can understand not everyone has the stones to willingly put their lives in danger for others, the absence of that resolve should truly limit their authority. That means they don't get guns, the tactical gear, "special training" that comes off more as racist brainwashing, and all the shit that lets them LARP being a badass. They can enjoy desk duty, finding an old lady's cat, or whatever non-threatening community service is needed.

Of course, if you sign that social contract and still chicken out, it needs consequences. And not just moving to another district where hopefully no one knows who you are or cares to look into it.

The police are not responsible for your safety. The Supreme Court ruled on that way back.

They’re more of a reactive force rather than proactive.

Not saying this excuses how poorly this was handled, but you always gotta keep that in mind, because the police certainly do.

If I am paid to do a job and I fail to do that job, I expect not to be allowed to continue to have that job. I also expect that in specific high responsibility high potential for damage jobs, such as, say, being a surgeon, that if I fail my job this spectacularly, I will be prevented from holding it ever again.

It is sad we have more accountability for doctors than police.
