Major League Baseball has once again teamed with the independent Atlantic League to test rule changes, with the current set aimed at keeping starting pitchers in the game longer and creating more balls in play.

In the second half of Atlantic League play this summer, starting Aug. 3, the pitching rubber will be moved back 1 foot -- to 61 feet, 6 inches -- giving hitters more time to react to pitches, according to a release by MLB on Wednesday.

With strikeout rates increasing for 15 consecutive years, MLB determined that the additional foot would be the "minimum interval needed to evaluate a change in mound distance." The hope is fewer swing-and-misses and more contact -- a change that is "meaningful without being disruptive," according to the release.

The Atlantic League will also implement a "double-hook" rule, in which a team will lose its designated hitter when it removes its starting pitcher. That rule will be in effect the entire season, which starts May 27. The goal is to see starters pitch longer into games, creating more value for them and increasing late-game strategy.

The experiments in the Atlantic League come after baseball instituted several rule changes at the minor league levels, including bigger bases, regulating the shift and forcing pitchers to disengage from the rubber completely before throwing to any base.

In a statement released on his Twitter feed Tuesday, free-agent outfielder Yasiel Puig has denied claims in a lawsuit that he sexually assaulted a woman in 2018 and said that the allegations have prevented him from continuing his Major League career.

"I am speaking out now to defend my name against false and malicious allegations by a woman who claims I assaulted her in 2018," Puig wrote. "These allegations are totally false, the evidence proves they are false, and I look forward to all the facts and the truth coming out."

The woman, identified in federal court documents as only Jane Roe, sued Puig last October, saying the former Dodgers outfielder followed her into a Staples Center bathroom after a Lakers game on Oct. 31, 2018, "pinned her with one arm" to prevent her from leaving, groped her and masturbated in front of her.

The woman did not file a police report. Puig has not been charged with any crime, and he has previously denied the allegations in a court filing.

In his statement Tuesday, released by his attorneys, Puig said: "The fact is that I had consensual sex with a woman I met at a Lakers game after she propositioned me. Afterward we talked about going out together, but she said she did not want her fiancé to find out."

Attorney Taylor Rayfield, who is representing the woman, said in a statement to ESPN on Wednesday, "The simple fact of the matter is that our client never engaged in consensual sexual activity with Mr. Puig -- not at the Staples Center Chairman's Club, and not anywhere else."

Multiple employees within the New York Mets organization say their complaints about inappropriate workplace behavior were not acted on, according to a report from The Athletic.

The report also details allegations of inappropriate conduct or sexual harassment by David Newman -- the Mets' chief marketing, content and communications officer who was rehired by the team last year -- and former marketing staffer Joe DeVito.

More than a dozen people, men and women, told The Athletic that Holly Lindvall, Mets senior vice president of human resources and diversity, was aware of complaints of harassing language and actions without action being taken against the perpetrators, complaints that included sexist comments by former owner Jeff Wilpon and former manager Mickey Callaway. The people told The Athletic they felt Lindvall would rather keep ownership happy than investigate their complaints.

"It was clear that her interest was protecting ownership and executives and not the office as a whole," one former employee told The Athletic. "You could not go to HR to feel protected, comfortable, anything."

Newman, who is accused of making inappropriate comments about women's appearances while with the team from 2005 to 2018, told The Athletic that he didn't recall making such comments. Newman was rehired to his current position in November.

DeVito allegedly sent inappropriate text messages to women and gave one woman an unsolicited back rub. He resigned from his position in March, saying he wanted to reassess his career, but told The Athletic in an email that he "won't dignify the allegations you are hearing with a response except to say I've always tried to be a gentleman with everyone with whom I work and with whom I'm involved with personally."
