A coronavirus variant discovered in Colombia is showing up among patients in South Florida, increasing infections and putting health officials on alert as call...

Currently known as B.1.621 and accounts for 10% of all cases in Miami. It currently isn't any deadlier than Delta, but it is affecting the Latin American community.

It's noted in the article that the Delta variant accounted for 10% of all cases in June and now accounts for 80% of all cases.

In LA county for the month of June 2021, breakthrough cases accounted for 20% of all confirmed cases. Conversely, vaccinated individuals accounted for only 8% of hospital admissions. For July, the percentage of breakthrough infections has risen to 26%. Of the number of deaths for Q2 2021, 96% were unvaccinated. And the mRNA vaccines marginally protect better than J&J (though at this point looks statistically insignificant) :

So far, L.A. County hasn’t seen a huge divergence in breakthrough infections by vaccine type.

As of this week, only 0.27% of people fully vaccinated with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine had later become infected — compared with 0.15% of Pfizer-BioNTech recipients and 0.09% of those who got Moderna.

Overall despite the increasing numbers of infections in the county, the percentage of people requiring hospitalization has remained flat (raw number of total admissions have increased of course.)

Sounds like Delta is going to give you 2 outcomes

Vaccinated - Unlikely but decent chance of catching Delta, almost for sure not a serious illness

Unvaccinated - Basically guaranteed you get Delta, still PROBABLY not a serious illness, but statistically speaking, overwhelmingly more likely it fucks you up vs. vaccinated people

Models have been really terrible to be honest, especially for delta. The UK topped out way earlier than expected, no reason the same can't happen for the US. Still, who knows, ya know?
