I think the assertion has generally been that lower/middle school kids aren't hit as hard as we would normally expect the little human disease vectors to be while older highschoolers and college aged kids are basically adults and get COVID at adult rates.
It isn't like biology cares about the particular age demarcations of our education system. It would be convenient if the virus was like, "Oh, you turn 18 in October and not September? Damn, I got the dates wrong. I guess I have to wait until next year to infect you." but that really isn't how it works.
I think the assertion was these little shits aren't particularly good reservoirs for the virus, before someone posts another story about how the virus continues to spread to families because their children went in person to school.

Good NYT article about how outdoor transmission is exceedingly rare and why the CDC is so loathe to admit it.
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/11/b...e=articleShare
The CDC is "so loathe to admit it" because people are fucking stupid and will think "well I'm safe if I'm outside, fuck the rules"
I'm sure the majority of the "Guidelines" come from the idea that most people are fucking retards.
Medical professionals aren't loathe to admit it, we know your average fucking tool will go SEE WE DON'T NEED RESTRICTIONS AT ALL and suddenly everyone is walking around without masks irrespective of whether they're indoors or not.
I and many I know already don't use masks outside unless there are large numbers of people walking around. Large numbers means lots of air exchange means lots of potential for transmission.
Most people already knew this to be true. Many people, like 50% of the country, don't make informed decisions.
sounds like you are loathe to admit it
I loathe the mopping.
I reject the idea of dogs being hit, dogs hollering, things of that nature
I went to Walmart the other day during a storm. Fucking pouring down, but needed some shit for dinner. Got to the door, realized I forgot my mask. I parked too far away to go back, so I went in and grabbed my shit and left. First time indoors without a mask in about a year. Felt weird, thought I was going to kill someone even though I've been vaccinated since January.
bro, cancelled!
I think stuff like that is going to be how most people get back to their pre-pandemic behavior. Eventually most will fall back into normal activities and the apprehension will fade.
Especially with the knowledge in your head that you are not making a mistake or taking any meaningful risk.
