Trying to walk back that the popular theory, whether explicitly saying "bat soup" or not, was that the virus originated in Chinese wet markets from a bat specimen is beyond retarded. That was the narrative for over a year.

But by the same token, trying to speculate that there was a lab-based origin when zoonotic diseaes are the largest drivers of epidemics and pandemics is similarly specious. The wet market bat theory is by far the most plausible when weighed against the sum of the human experience.

It's actually kind of amazing how much people try to GOTCHA Fauci when all he does offer his opinion after receiving new information. He didn't say the virus originated in a lab, he just said he won't rule it out and supports a investigation. SCANDAL.

Its more of an indictment of professionals or media that were dead set and absolutely certain that it couldn't have originated in a lab. The correct answer always was, it's unlikely it's lab originated but not impossible. The people I see complaining most are using it as an opportunity to blast the media
