Fearmongering for the pixel remake. I have 0 evidence.

@Corr: Depends on what you mean by changed. The original version had some stuff cut out, but that wasn't from censorship, just bits of script and scenes that were in the data files but were never finished, for whatever reason. The unmasking and drinking scene between Strago and Shadow is one of them. A few modded versions put them back in since the data was still there, including that fantastic mod that came out a few months back.

The only reason I bring up the censorship is because so many people are crying out for a 3D remake, but the second you upgrade from cutesy sprites to actual polys, lots of things suddenly get cut from those classic SNES sprite-era games. Gone are the guards beating the shit out of Celes, the people getting thrown into the bottomless pits when the Warring Triad are moved and other depictions of violence that were fine in sprite form. CERO ratings have changed a lot in Japan since those days, and they're far less likely to depict anything outside of generic violence in a mainline FF title to keep away from those upper CERO ratings that absolutely cannibalize sales potential.

Its a big reason I don't want 3D remakes of 2D SNES RPGs of that era, just Octopath-esque 2.5D blow-ups. They can preserve all of the original scene impact without having to neuter anything down because the characters on-screen suddenly look a lot more human. Same deal with getting a new Ogre Battle game: a fully 3D, modernized game would have to be watered down in terms of what they'd show, and that series was never afraid to show the harsh realities of war, even if they were cutesy sprites bleeding out and lying dead on the floor.

Just imagine a remake of our good buddy Luca Blight, all done in unreal engine in 2022-era graphics. We can barely show a person getting stabbed in a FFXIV cutscene these days because of CERO considerations, much less other ratings boards. Not really sure we'd be seeing him slaughtering villagers while screaming "Die, Pig, Die!" in fully-realized 3D.

You can obviously allude to those kinds of scenes in a modern main-line FF game, but those scenes were powerful in what they were displaying to the player on-screen. Having to find ways to show that kind of visceral visual impact without blowing the CERO rating up to nuclear levels isn't something I trust these companies to pull off.

Yeah you're right it wasn't censorship. I just thought they made the relation between Relm/Shadow more obvious but I could be wrong.

Anyway I'm guessing they will keep the censored scene of Celes being interrogated (along with changes to some sprites like they did models in FF8 to hide partial nudity) due to CERO ratings being a thing in Japan since the SNES release.

That censorship could have been Nintendo's doing, not Square.

I dunno. Nintendo seems pretty chill about censorshipa nowadays which is kind of bizarre given the NES/SNES era.

I wish. I'd love an all-in-one collection for Switch. Though I'd be losing modding access...

They got over their censorship when they no longer had to worry about Nintendo of America executives in the U.S. telling them that crazed moral crusade parents were no longer threatening to burn down their homes for "promoting the devil's work" for having a "pub" called a "bar" in a SNES RPG That, and Fox and CNN no longer running an expose on how "games are murdering kids, literally!" every week on the nightly news. 80's and 90's Nintendo Censorship had more to do with our own freaked-out parents and society than some grand conspiracy from Nintendo to steal away everyone's fun. It was a business decision rooted in common sense.

Nintendo is now pretty chill about censorship. Its Sony that tightened their belt, because of the increased power of CERO ratings to absolutely destroy sales in Japan. The CEO of Sony takes that shit very seriously, so Sony tightened up a lot of what their Japanese-made games can and will show.

Looks like they're going 2.5D for the Opera scene in the FF6 Pixel Remaster. https://twitter.com/FinalFantasy/sta...20866696794112

So I won't ever understand why anyone complains about the pixel versions because the OST is so much better? I don't get it

You're saying the OST does slap, therefore you're surprised people complain about the games?

Yeah I'm not really understanding that when I can just listen to the OST outside of playing the game...???

One part of something is good, therefore people shouldn't complain about any of the other parts?

That sounds like some "love it or leave it" bullshit.

Nah I feel you. I don't knock the OSTs of these, generally, because they're largely improvements to the original (4's battle theme volume balancing aside). The composers have nothing to do with design of the game, though. They aren't the ones having these bright-ass sprites with little shading on them.

The OST is pretty darn good, with some nice additional and flourishes.

I mean I still think your bright ass sprites complaint is nitpicky but hey if it takes away from your enjoyment of the game, guess there's other versions for you to play

I will say though I disagree with this. The soundtrack quality improves the gameplay experience for me so listening to it outside has nothing to do with it really
