Fearmongering for the pixel remake. I have 0 evidence.
@Corr: Depends on what you mean by changed. The original version had some stuff cut out, but that wasn't from censorship, just bits of script and scenes that were in the data files but were never finished, for whatever reason. The unmasking and drinking scene between Strago and Shadow is one of them. A few modded versions put them back in since the data was still there, including that fantastic mod that came out a few months back.
The only reason I bring up the censorship is because so many people are crying out for a 3D remake, but the second you upgrade from cutesy sprites to actual polys, lots of things suddenly get cut from those classic SNES sprite-era games. Gone are the guards beating the shit out of Celes, the people getting thrown into the bottomless pits when the Warring Triad are moved and other depictions of violence that were fine in sprite form. CERO ratings have changed a lot in Japan since those days, and they're far less likely to depict anything outside of generic violence in a mainline FF title to keep away from those upper CERO ratings that absolutely cannibalize sales potential.
Its a big reason I don't want 3D remakes of 2D SNES RPGs of that era, just Octopath-esque 2.5D blow-ups. They can preserve all of the original scene impact without having to neuter anything down because the characters on-screen suddenly look a lot more human. Same deal with getting a new Ogre Battle game: a fully 3D, modernized game would have to be watered down in terms of what they'd show, and that series was never afraid to show the harsh realities of war, even if they were cutesy sprites bleeding out and lying dead on the floor.
Just imagine a remake of our good buddy Luca Blight, all done in unreal engine in 2022-era graphics. We can barely show a person getting stabbed in a FFXIV cutscene these days because of CERO considerations, much less other ratings boards. Not really sure we'd be seeing him slaughtering villagers while screaming "Die, Pig, Die!" in fully-realized 3D.
You can obviously allude to those kinds of scenes in a modern main-line FF game, but those scenes were powerful in what they were displaying to the player on-screen. Having to find ways to show that kind of visceral visual impact without blowing the CERO rating up to nuclear levels isn't something I trust these companies to pull off.
