It works great when on your home network. Getting it setup to work outside is tricky and annoying. (For some reason, the "wake up packet" doesn't work from outside home, I have to do something stupid like connect on my phone to wake it up, then connect on the deck, and it can be real finicky.)

Make sure to turn off that annoying start up beep in your settings.

Setup doc is good. Setting up the automation step is 100% worth.

Chiaki4deck for the PS remote play def + Emudeck #1 emulation nation

Decky is solid for customization business but ya not really essential anymore. Bottles allows you to get more or less every launcher in existence working on Desktop mode, Heroic is specifically for Epic/GoG games and works perfectly, Microsoft Edge lets you access Game Pass if you have it through their cloud gaming business. little work and you got basically every game in existence operable on Steam Deck.

also i just got the OLED edition too, man that screen looks nice. even old shit like FFVIII or Jeanne D'Arc on ppsspp look stunnin

I bought a 1tb SSD just to hold ally roms and such. Currently running scraper to load up the box arts and descriptions on every new/snes/gb game plus a few other random roms I loaded.

What are some good psp rpg gems I may have missed?

Also not really RPGs but if you're digging into PSP games the Patapon series is a fantastic time.

Haven't thought of Jeanne in a bit

That and Hecyz force, as well as CGS pushed me to get a PSP. Pretty sure I finished Hexyz and Jeanne. Can't recall if I did w CGS.

Metal Gear Acid 1 & 2, if you like turn based grid tactical and Slay the Spire card ability/deck building.
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite and Portable 3rd, for the last pre-nintendo style Monster Hunters.
And since you cant really play Phantasy Star Universe anymore, Phantasy Star Portable 1 & 2 are the next best options.

Edi:, Also to go with Patapon, LocoRoco 1 & 2.

Oh damn, I actually do have Phantasy Star Portable 2 sitting around.

It was like $8 at Gamestop so I figured 'eh why not'. Liked the little bit I played of it.

I figure this should work theoretically but I don't know if there's something specific to the hardware I'm not aware of. Would a portable Switch dock (a charger that plugs into the wall with a USB-C, HDMI, and USB-A input) work to connect a Steam deck to a TV?

That entirely depends on the underlying hardware of the dock.

Afaik the Switch is effectively outputting a displayport signal that needs to be converted to HDMI. But the Switch doesn't follow proper USB protocols so whether or not it works properly or bricks your Switch is a crapshoot.

Just watched a video on it and it seems like the Switch's PD protocol causes issues and these can happen regardless of the dock. The culprit are chargers without proper resistors that cause the Switch to request too much voltage and the overdraw bricks the Switch. So if you input a crappy charger to an official dock you can still fry a Switch. Badly designed docks exacerbate the issues because docking mode requests more power for TV mode and if a dock doesn't have a proper PD protocol it won't transmit the Switch's request correctly, resulting in an overdraw even if it was an otherwise compliant charger.

Genki Stealth docks (what I was looking at) are confirmed not to brick a Switch and they work with Steam Decks, but apparently they are not powerful enough to charge a Deck in use so it causes a slow drain. The Jumpgate seems to be the most versatile solution; the core is a fully compliant hub that transmits requests correctly and you can take the core and switch it between Switch and Steam Deck docking shells (or use it for a laptop). It still requires bringing an AC charger along though, but I guess that's not a huge deal for most of us that also travel with a USB-C charger for phones and laptops.

There's also this thing? Their website claims it works with both and Skull & Co is a good company

That's the Jumpgate I mentioned. You can take the core out of the dock and use it as a portable USB-C hub, or transfer the core between two different shells meant to hold the Switch and the Steam Deck (since their ports are on different ends of the console)

Steam Deck 2 in development, but no official announcement until they can balance battery life with better graphics
More hardware in development (possible and Index 2)

That makes me real worried for the price of the Steam Machine. It also kills the value proposition of the Deck at that new price with the power it has, if you care about playing anything remotely modern.
