Entirely possible it overwhelms the masks and vaccines and one of my kids brings it home from school, we'll see.

My south Florida lab is still over 50% positive rate almost a week later good luck dodging this strain y'all cause you're gonna need it

We're desperately low on testing supplies across the board, including reagents. It's day to day right now, we might get a delivery and be able to test for another few days, or we won't and we gotta send these out to another lab to get done.

Also fun facts: the reagent kit costs $6000 (three zeros). We can run 250-300 tests with that, and medicare pays out $100ish total per test, $25ish for the collection and $75ish for the test itself. Depending on contracts you can get private insurance to pay 2-3x more, but that's more an exception than the rule.

The reagent is also time sensitive and is only viable for 72hrs after preparation. Use it or lose it.

Are you allowed/able to assess if the patient is asymptomatic?

Heh, that's not as bad as one of the test kits my work division sells. "25" tests for like $4000. I put it in quotes since all our customers extend that out to 45+ tests by cutting the amount of testing material used.

We ask, but it's entirely self reported. They just circle yes or no on a series of questions, one of which is if they're symptomatic.

Better than nothing tbh. I know the reports often show "x% tests administered came back positive", but I think % of tests to asymptomatic people would also be a very important dataset to report.

Problem is they just pencil whip it, the answers are just for statistics and don't affect the test or how we test them so half the time they just make a straight line down of circles. Honestly I have zero faith in any asymptomatic statistic put out right now, it's just spreading too fast and qualified people are not the ones making the determination.

FiLs boss, at an Italian restaurant, is likely gonna force him to show up to work. He's mildly symptomatic, just a scratchy throat, but big yikes and "saying the quiet part out loud" energy. He likely got it from a coworker who dragged his feet getting tested after he had symptoms cause of the long wait lines, and also cause he would have to miss work if it came back positive. Now 5 others already have it, and my FiL is the 6th.

Idk man, I feel like blatantly lying and spreading covid should be a crime but it's not. Can't even apply social pressure when it's managers going "hmmm...turn a blind eye and let the covid people work or shut the business down for a week and lose out on holiday business". The answer is easy, and wrong imo. Idk how much more I can complain though, the vaccinated are weathering this storm just fine, but socially this entire situation is fuckeddd

California's rolling 7-day positive test rate is now 9.7%. Also the weekend numbers caught up for southern California counties. 38k in LA county alone, 15k in the surrounding 4 counties.

Y'all got mandatory indoor masks in Cali or nah?

This is a great time to see the effectiveness of masks, although it's so virulent that it might not matter tbh.

Masks might work with this if everyone was very strict to how they wear them.

The right type, never taking them off for any reason, properly fit, etc.

"Masking indoors" != 500 people walking into the bar with a mask on for 5 seconds then sitting down unmasked for 2 hours, chin diapers, etc.

    Point being, they probably won't.

I went to Orange County to buy my PC from Microcenter. So many people don't give a fuck about masks there. Masking is required for the entire state.

It's the holiday surge that I'm assuming is from the Friday/Sunday/Monday testing. People were sick prior to Christmas.

Have no idea how those numbers equate on a per capita basis.

And LA county is reporting back 14.5% positive test rates on the rolling 7 day. I think Riverside and San Bernadino counties (outlying areas and more politically conservative) have higher rates.
