This is actively being studied, and the data is kind of promising. Theoretically preventing reuptake of serotonin would prevent activation of some inflammatory cytokines. The rest is something I'm still reading up on.

The data really is too scarce right now to suggest a meaningful reason, and the most probable explanation is placebo.

It turned out that one of the SSRIs that worked well, fluvoxamine, binds to a receptor in cells that regulates cellular stress response and the production of cytokines, proteins that tell the body something is wrong and cause inflammation. Researchers at the University of Virginia found that fluvoxamine reduced inflammation in animals. Reiersen wondered if that was why it worked well for her patients.

Then the pandemic hit. One leading theory of what happens when patients suffer through Covid-19 is that cells damaged by the disease release tons of cytokines, which then causes inflammation in the lungs that can make it hard to breathe and cause lasting tissue damage.

No they didn't. Based on the paper, 1472 were treated with placebo/Luvox versus 1766 treated with something else. The paper also didn't say what that other treatment was. Was it a standard of care? If so, you can't compare Luvox to Placebo and omit the rest of the data.

185 people were admitted or observed from the test arms. 185/1472. So if we ignore the remaining data like they did I guess the relative risk looks awesome. 0.71 compared to 1.0 is pretty impressive.

It's also not an absolute risk. When you calculate that, the absolute reduction is 2.1%, which means 476 people would need to receive that for there to be any benefit, if it's even significant at all. They even admit outcomes were no different at 7 days, which isn't promising.

It gets even worse if you include the rest of the cases that received other treatment, because that's almost what, 55% of the data? So 55% of the patients received different treatment and off the remaining 45% there was a 2% reduction in outcomes, which weren't very specific to begin with.
