So I'm in the Barret/Yuffie/Red part, get the wings down, get the core down, only thing left is an untargetable Seph reborn. Two of the characters are range and just shooting into the fucking wind. So after a few minutes of this, I figure I'm meant to lose or something, let myself die, and then game over screen. ???????? Is it really meant to be untargetable the whole time? I read a website going over it and they are just like "throw all limit breaks and synergy abilities at him and he will go into next phase when he hits 0" but like, I literally couldn't? Game wasn't even letting me use the Red XIII limit break which just gives him a super vengeance mode. So I'm confused, and a bit mad if I have to repeat all the fucking phases again, we'll see once I hit retry.

If you select the first option you should only restart from the last phase. The wording is super dumb on the continues and I used the second option I think and I had to repeat like 20 min of the fight, fml

Yeah, found that out. Also found out that my game must have bugged, as I had no issue in second try.

As for the ending...

Personally loved it. This might diminish as I do some rewatches of other streams and some breakdown videos, but for everything they covered and having to also set up another game I think they basically gave us everything we could have gotten. Stayed mostly true to the story but epic teases for all sorts of other things. They tossed in Zack just to fuck with us, but didn't fundamentally alter the story. So we got to see Zack, fight as/with Zack, but didn't have to entirely change the story to do so. It's an incredibly fine needle to thread and I think they managed it about as good as possible.

This game was 11/10 and I don't think there's a chance in fuck they can get part 3 to be as good. I'll give them props if they can manage part 3 to be closer to Rebirth than Remake in terms of enjoyable. This game was gripping from start to finish, and aside from some gripes at least partially user error in terms of navigating some zones, it was everything I could have ever dreamed of and more. This game was my first final fantasy, and first major RPG (legit my only RPG experience before it was Shining Force 2 and 1) and as such has always been elevated over most other games, and they just did every single thing to improve upon what I already considered a really, really good game. If I had to guess, game 3 will probably be closer to Remake in terms of pure storyline, but hopefully they flesh out the world so it has as much content as Rebirth. And if they give us some awesome 'endgame' stuff to work towards I'll be quite happy with it all.

I saved her, I did it and all of a sudden it’s like “nah bro” but the whole parallel worlds thing going on implies that in one of those worlds I DID save her. Also don’t think I didn’t notice your switcharoo Aerith! OG Aerith hands Cloud her glowing Holy materia, Cloud gives it to HIS Aerith, His Aerith gives him back the perfecly clear materia.

Honestly, I think they are going to do multiple endings for part 3. It makes the most sense. You do everything right, and you will get Zack and Aerith back in your world. Otherwise, you get the Advent Children ending where they're somewhat linked but as far as Cloud and co. is concerned, they're dead.

that last Brutal simulator fight, Rulers of the Outer Realm for the Gotterdammerung, the first 3 fights in it? no problem, easy peasy, Gilgamesh can go fuck himself though, he's way harder then he was when I fought him during the protorelic quests, and then after him is Virtual Sephiroth which honestly I just haven't gotten to enough to know his patterns yet, but damn I must have tried this damn fight like 50 times so far

Oof. Yeah I'm wrapping up the final sidequests in chapter 12 now. I might try and finish it this weekend and then go do the rest of the stuff after. I already have like 70 hours, not sure I want to do another 20 of sidequests and exploring, It's teetering on the line of overstaying its welcome. Pre-Gold Saucer. I fully expected the same, after FF7 Remake ending. It was straight out of Kingdom Hearts. This game is quite good, maybe even great. But certain decisions around the plot keep it from being amazing.

Without spoilers or details (will wait another week or 2 before posting all my thoughts) it's better than Remake without any question but definitely several things that I think really shit the bed. Unpopular opinion: most of the music is quantity over quality and 70% of the tracks could have not existed. Remixes on the existing final fantasy music were great but there was way too much synthwave and other weird shit for me, not what I'm looking for in this kind of game.

Anyway probably 7.5/10~8/10 for me but we'll see if I change my mind after ruminating.

I really enjoyed the Jenova fight here, though it didn't feel very challenging, unlike the previous Jenova fights. I also really enjoyed Cloud and Aerith versus Sephiroth, but everything with Bizarro Sephiroth was just awkward. I didn't like that it was shoehorned in here without any explanation or reasoning, no one was like what happened to him, what is this even, etc. The first phase, I was like oh shit they brought him in here, and it was just solo Cloud...but all you did was stab him in the ass repeatedly. I think I dodged a couple of ground purple explosion things and that was it. Zack popping up here...I dunno. I didn't hate it, but it didn't feel that deserved or that it had any purpose at all, other than to be like hey, Zack's here too! Maybe I would have felt differently if you did anything meaningful with Zack over the course of the game instead of a handful of 5~ minute tidbits that just make you wonder what's going on.

I still don't even know what Zack is doing. Was that other timeline just a dream world created by Aerith or what? What was the point of Biggs at all? Dude goes on about having purpose and continuing to live, then just gets randomly bodied for shock value. Feels like he was only included to show that he was the Biggs from Remake's world and not some other world's Biggs.

This ending has me in a bit of a mess. Remake had some weirdness, but at least it made some degree of sense - You "defeated" fate, Sephiroth with future memories absorbs fate, continues doing some fuckery to get what he wants. This ending though, I don't know what to make of it. You beat swoll Sephiroth, he grins because he knows it's not over/going to summon meteor once Cloud gets him the black materia (which he had and willingly dropped because...they had to have the 3rd game?), then more fuckery?

Bit of a spoiler rant in the spoiler. Game before ending is a pretty easy 9 outta 10 for me. Some jank with exploration/tediousness/some mini games being more annoying than enjoyable, but they exceeded my expectations with what they did with the world and the characters.

Hopefully the unresolved Hojo brain injection for Chadley winds up with us not having to deal with him or any other AI companion quite as much in the 3rd game.

Replace Chadley with local characters interacting with you via coms and the open world would be a bit more enjoyable I think.

Let's not bury the lede.. the ending. My interpretation is as follows: Aerith pulls Cloud into the multiverse in order to give him a still-functioning holy materia to bring to his "world" because the materia in her possession there has gone translucent. This occurs in a previously unseen "world" with a new stamp, and in the following scenes we see Aerith push Cloud between worlds, various outcomes of Zack making decisions in multiple other "worlds", and Sephiroth stating the "worlds" are uniting. For reasons unbeknownst to me (and feel free to chime in), the catalyst for this happening was Cloud+Aerith plummeting after being struck by Sephiroth. And also unbeknownst to me, we reconvene at the Forgotten Capital with no bridge of the events that occurred in the main world after the fall while we were world hopping.

Even in a bubble without getting into what happens afterwards.. that was physically painful to write. What a convoluted mess. And when you do take into account what follows, it's a goddamn tragedy. I thought FF16's ending was mildly irritating with its "up for interpretation" bullshit leaving everyone with blue balls/without closure, but you know what's worse? LITERALLY showing both outcomes and completely undermining the impact of THE moment. Yes, THE Aerith moment. She's saved, then she's dead, because MuLtIpLe WoRlDs! "But ok she's dead in this one haha". A mere hour after tugging at my heartstrings by making me play as little girl Aerith looking for help to save her dying mother, you completely botch what everyone knew was the most important moment in the game. I don't even want to talk about what follows, because fuck off. Cloud still sees Aerith, he's sees the fractured sky nobody else does, and finds a black materia in his pocket(a second materia, or the translucent materia Aerith swapped with him turned black?). Blah, Blah, BLAH.

The game was CRUISING up until this point. I thought it was great. Yes Chadley/MIA were annoying as hell, and sure the world intel got repetitive (except for a few standouts, protorelics were mostly good and a few quests were as well), but the gripes were minor. I played meticulously and did everything along the way thinking "hell yeah I'm gonna platinum this thing". I thought the combat was improved from Remake, where I remember alot of encounters giving me the stop sign mid-stagger and frustrating the hell out of me for playing optimally. That only happened two or three times in this one in understandable situations... until the final boss, where it happened like a half dozen times as the entire thing unraveled for me.

Other random thoughts:
- The minigames were mostly fun, and the ones that weren't so much didn't really overstay their welcome. They did a good job. I liked Queen's Blood, and at first I thought they were setting up a cool little story behind it. That flopped and it ended up being lame as hell, but it was still a fun game.
- They got me good with that chicken quest, I was two seconds from going to the title screen if I actually had to lead that fucker all the way back. The funny ending did not make up for it, what a nightmare lol.
- These Moogles are easily the worst I can remember. White Teddy Ruxpin looking mofos, gross.
- Probably the only good thing I can say about Chapter 14, I did appreciate the subtlety of giving every single character except Cloud (who still sees Aerith) a full limit bar to start the final boss fight. Clever, even if I hate the reasons for it.
- Music was insane, everything had it's own track and it BOPPED.
