playing FFVII Rebirth finally on PC. I like it. Feels less intuitive somehow but still a good ride so far.

Following up:
I'm on Chapter 9 and I've definitely enjoyed the game. The combat system is good. The visuals are amazing. The story is pretty ok. I do like that materia gets AP even when equipped on people not in the active party. I do wish there was an active party swap though, like 3 for 3. I think I'm close to the end but I want to go back to 100% a few of the earlier areas. The music is also fucking awesome.

Yeah, PC Rebirth is a pretty solid port. With all side quests and still super boss + summon left to go it took me 115 hours of pure fun. Enjoy the ride, you've still got a good chunk left.

Story gets better and better towards the end as well.

I think it was meant to be homage to the Dirge Cait Sith stealth sequence, but in that you at least got to kick exploding fuel barrels at inept hyrule courtyard guards.

Most heinous "minigame" for me was the god damned Gongaga chicken wrangling (which, to your point, was at least skippable).

Finally beat this game.

Man that ending fucking sucked. Fun enough ride, fine for a nostalgia trip, but if this was my first foray into FF7 I'd have no idea wtf was going on. Some real kingdom hearts nomura shit going on, IDK if I like it. I probably don't. At least the original is still there...but this is definitely not what I wanted out of a remake tbh

The series is doing a good job of fleshing out the main sequence of the game, but the parts where they have to explain how this is a different game/timeline is where things start to fray a bit.

A lot depends on them sticking the landing, but they definitely handled it better this time around than Remake.

They spent the entire climax of Remake trying to convince me that we can change the timeline, acting like we're on the way to change the timeline, then spend the entirety of Rebirth hinting that we're in a different timeline (we were).

Then they pull the rug out from under us in the climax and saying all these differences are different timelines but we don't get that timeline for ourselves, now go watch Aerith die again. They even let us save Aerith, just to go psyche she dead anyways. Very unfun, my expectations were subverted in a bad way.

IDK man, the entire game revolved around "things are different this time!" and then literally in the final 1-2 hrs of the game they go "actually no it's not" and wewww boy do I feel betrayed. Over 100+ hours of "things are similar but different, we even got Zack and Biggs here! Cloud and Aerith are in a coma over here too!" just to end the game with "yeah they all exist in another universe, every single cutscenes and story beat with them had no bearing on your universe (a.k.a. fanfic), and in your universe the story is exactly the same. Here's a remixed arrangement for you to mourn Aerith with immediately after fake saving her."

We said this about remake to rebirth, and then this is how they concluded it.

I wouldn't be so irate if the story mentioned nothing about fate and whispers and was just the original game expanded on, but this is the original game expanded on and the red herring of "this timeline is different!" followed by it not actually being different, it's just not time or budget constrained like the OG was.

I was actually invested in how events will be different because of timeline differences, but at the end of it everything is the same. Just a weird direction to take the story after two entire games of "let's change fate!" It's not like it was even earned either, it's literally just Sephiroth chuckling followed by him undoing everything you've been building towards the last two games with over half a decade of anticipation. Just what a bummer of a plot thread.

It's been longer since I played the ending but

I felt like they did the scene very well. I can understand a letdown if you really thought they would branch off at the end and make Part 3 a totally different game by having her survive which would have implications for her summoning Holy.

But there was definitely a point in it beyond blue balling you from the suspense. By traversing to the alternate reality, Aerith was able to switch her white materia with the one from the dead world but Cloud also brings back the black materia. The reason why the white materia and black materia had to be Endgame heisted is yet to be discovered, but it's obviously something that is going to be relevant in Part 3.
