The Colbert bit was funny. A lot of people seem to think the Hamilton tribute was cringey and off-the-mark but I personally don't like any musicals and can't see their appeal. I've become so sick of bougie friends gushing about Hamilton these years I just assume that like Nascar there's something someone must like about it but it's not me.

Not that much news today but a few things:

While the J6 Committee stated last month it would begin public hearings in early 2022 people were assuming that meant January. Now DailyBeast cites Bennie Thompson saying they're looking at March/April to air the hearings. One possible reason for this could be that SCOTUS will be deciding Donald's appeal of presidential authority to not release his archive records to the Committee.

The details are still being worked out, with members of the committee looking at March or April for when the hearings would begin.

The U.S. Capitol Police — in a Special Event Assessment dated Jan. 3, 2021 — flagged potential danger stemming from comments made by Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) in the lead-up to Jan. 6.

“In an interview Friday evening on pro-Trump news network Newsmax, Representative Gohmert claimed that letting the will of the voters stand would ‘mean the end of our republic... ‘We’re not going to touch this. You have no remedy – basically, in effect, the ruling would be that you gotta go to the streets and be as violent as Antifa and BLM.’”

The department’s interest in politicians and protests wasn’t limited to Gohmert. Later in the same report, it discussed plans for a major rally on the Ellipse, and noted that the White House “is actively participating in the planning of this event.”

I hate the present) saying that Pence would likely comply if subpoenaed but would be hesitant to cooperate with the Committee voluntarily. People are reading this as a pretty transparent way to signal he wants to be involved but also wants an excuse of saying "oh darn, I've been subpoenaed guess I have to." Maybe Dan frigging Quayle will give him the nod on this one too.

I can't even keep track of how many people have sued at this point, but more Capitol police officers are suing Donald for his role in the insurrection.

It's unclear whether these 14th amendment challenges will succeed or what standards may be used. The article notes that in NC laws the state elections board appoints a panel examine the claims to reach an initial decision. Looking at the Board's website page it lists 3 Democrats, 2 Republicans and an Executive Director with no stated party alignment (but in NC I'd assume Republican?)

Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment, known as the Disqualification Clause, provides: “No Person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress. . . who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress . . . to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.” The purpose of the Disqualification Clause, passed in the wake of the Civil War, is not to punish the oathbreaker but rather to protect the country. No criminal conviction or prior adjudication is required under the Disqualification Clause, although Cawthorn would be able to seek judicial review of an adverse decision.

The challenge will first be heard by a multi-county panel to be appointed by the North Carolina State Board of Elections. After the hearing, the panel will issue written findings of fact and conclusions of law. Its decision can be appealed by either side to the State Board, and the State Board’s decision can be appealed to the North Carolina Court of Appeals.

Twitter, Meta, Reddit, and YouTube have been subpoenaed for their role in spreading misinformation.

“Two key questions for the Select Committee are how the spread of misinformation and violent extremism contributed to the violent attack on our democracy, and what steps — if any — social media companies took to prevent their platforms from being breeding grounds for radicalizing people to violence," Thompson, D-Miss., said in the letter.

Thompson added that it's “disappointing that after months of engagement,” the four companies have not voluntarily turned over the necessary information and documents that would help lawmakers answer the questions at the heart of their investigation.

YouTube, owned by Alphabet, was the platform where a significant amount of communication took place “relevant to the planning and execution" of the siege against the Capitol, "including livestreams of the attack as it was taking place,” the letter stated.

The committee stated how Meta, formerly known as Facebook, was reportedly used to exchange hateful, violent and inciting messages between users as well as spread misinformation that the 2020 presidential election was fraudulent in an attempt to coordinate the “Stop the Steal” movement.

On Reddit, the r/The—Donald “subreddit” community grew significantly, the letter said, before members migrated to an official website where investigators believe discussions around the planning of the attack were hosted. A spokesperson for Reddit said Thursday that the company had received the subpoena and “will continue to work with the committee on their requests.”

The letter outlined how Twitter was warned about the potential violence that was being planned on its platform in advance of the attack and how its users engaged in “communications amplifying allegations of election fraud, including by the former President himself.”

Last August, the committee requested documents from TikTok, Parler, Telegram, 4chan, and 8kun among others. It's likely some of those did cooperate and we'll see more subpoenas soon.

A Michigan woman has been arrested for confronting U.S. Capitol Police with a loaded shotgun and an unloaded rifle.

The woman, Kery Lynn McAttee, 58, had a loaded shotgun and an unloaded .22 caliber rifle in her 2001 Chevrolet Silverado when she parked it in the “No Parking” zone in front of Capitol Police headquarters on Wednesday afternoon, police said. The headquarters is a little more than a half-mile from the U.S. Capitol.

“McAttee told our officers she drove here from Michigan and wanted to talk about information she had about Jan. 6, 2021,” police said.

Police said they recovered a loaded Mossberg .410 caliber shotgun and a Gamo pellet gun from the truck, along with a Remington Nylon 66 .22 caliber rifle and a Connecticut Valley Arms .50 caliber muzzle loader, both of which were unloaded.

She is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of unregistered ammunition, unlawful possession and transportation of a semi-automatic rifle and unlawful possession of a firearm misdemeanor.

The Oathkeepers had a hotel across the river in Virginia where guns are not banned as in DC, they intended to bring the huge stash of guns and ammo over to the Capitol when things got serious.

it was decided to instead amass guns in (at a minimum) the Ballston, VA Comfort Inn. The evidence thus far submitted shows that multiple participants knew of the stash, called it the QRF, and deposited their own weapons at the stash. The record is less certain about what plans the Oath Keepers had to transport that arsenal to DC, but in a remarkable comment on January 3, Kelly Meggs — who appears to have played a key role in organizing security for Roger Stone, inter-militia negotiations, and The Stack that pushed into the Rotunda on January 6, and who may have paid for two rooms to use for the QRF — suggested two rally points to receive the weapons: “1 if by land North side of Lincoln Memorial 2 if by sea Corner of west basin and Ohio is a water transport landing !!”
