Everyone else was between 5 and 1 games. Rendon got five and he's on IL for the season. Does that mean his five games kick in after he returns next season?

Yeah, from what I read, Freeman's agent only gave the Braves an hour to respond to a contract proposal, and when they didn't get back to it in time, they assumed the short deadline was just due to the fact he already had a pending contract with the Dodgers (he didn't) so they just immediately traded for Olsen.

I was always under the assumption players had the absolute final say where they went. To leave it at the whim of your agent seems absolutely nuts to me.

He probably told his agent his preference is with the Braves and the agent overplayed his hand and wound up making the Braves think they were out of the mix and jumped on the first chance to replace him.
