Why wouldn't they pray for victory over their opponent? It just seems it kinda went overboard. If it's after the game, not mandatory, and no one feels stigmatized for not attending then I wouldn't mind it, but I feel like it isn't quite like that there lol.

Government employees endorsing a particular religion while on the clock is bad, I don't want my kids exposed to that filth

But seriously including kids or making a public spectacle of it should be something a school can disallow.

Sure the school should be able to do that, but them trying to accommodate is, in my eyes, them trying to act in good faith up until it just went too far.

edit: after reading some later replies I lean towards agreeing with the above, but I'm still shocked this made it to the court when it happens in 99.999999999999999999999% of schools and football teams across the country

Something tells me that Boise State picked a bone with this dude because he's not Mormon (yes I'm aware this isn't Utah) or something. But I didn't read much into this.

It most certainly doesn't happen in that percentage. The south is a weird place

    ?

The coach was fired, why wouldn't he be able to appeal his firing to the Supreme Court if what he was doing was so obviously (in your eyes) constitutional?

Well yes, the court did get this wrong still lol. I'm fairness tho I think the school was right in trying to accommodate as much as they did, from what I read from some tweets haha

I figured it would have been settled a lot earlier in the appellate process, way before it got to SCOTUS. Not surprised that he appealed.

Worth noting, these are the 3 occasions he was fired for:

After receiving this letter, Mr. Kennedy offered a brief prayer following the October 16 game. See id., at 90. When he bowed his head at midfield after the game, “most [Bremerton] players were . . . engaged in the traditional singing of the school fight song to the audience.” Ibid. Though Mr. Kennedy was alone when he began to pray, players from the other team and members of the community joined him before he finished his prayer. See id., at 82, 297.

After the October 23 game ended, Mr. Kennedy knelt at the 50-yard line, where “no one joined him,” and bowed his head for a “brief, quiet prayer.” 991 F. 3d, at 1019; App. 173, 236–239.

After the final relevant football game on October 26, Mr. Kennedy again knelt alone to offer a brief prayer as the players engaged in postgame traditions. 443 F. Supp. 3d 1223, 1231 (WD Wash. 2020); App. to Pet. for Cert. 182. While he was praying, other adults gathered around him on the field. See 443 F. Supp. 3d, at 1231; App. 97. Later, Mr. Kennedy rejoined his players for a postgame talk, after they had finished singing the school fight song. 443 F. Supp. 3d, at 1231; App. 103.

Reading more into this it now seems to me like this dude was an attention whore that wanted to be noticed doing this. Then proved exactly that by forcing the issue, proved it even more by appealing to the court, and proved it further by continuing to appeal it to SCOTUS.

So in the end I agree with archi's original reply, the justices were obfuscating this to push their ideology. Something tells me that it wouldn't have been a 6-3 ruling if the dude had been praying to a different sky guy.

This is basically the whole premise of the Satanic Temple and everything they do when challenging religious shit like this

which is pretty ironic because I vaguely remember some passage in the new testament where some Pharisees were given a lot of shit for praying for attention's sake

How is asking a teacher not to pray with students while on the clock too far? The school is sanctioning an official to be leading religious ceremony otherwise.

If this was really about praying, he wouldn't feel the need to be on the 50-yard line. Makes me wish this was closer to me and i would bring a prayer mat and pray to Allah

Think he is saying the coach's actions went too far

I don't know, I still am on the coach's side here.

And technically, this case now applies it to every religion.

Technically? You put a similar case in front of this court with any other faith at its center and it's guaranteed to go the other way.

Yea this is one of Jesus' teachings/warnings. Don't have a verse available, but you got the gist of it. Makes me cringe seeing modern praise-worship Christianity (literal concerts in the church) and people that get "possessed" and roll around on the ground. It's no different than the Pharisee.
