Various news outlets stated they could find no active cases or investigations related to, and as you yourself pointed out there was HIPAA concerns around it.

Big, big difference between saying "apparently fake news" and "can anyone find a source to corroborate this".

The likely reason behind there being nothing actively reported is probably to protect the patient in question, it's pretty common (especially with family involved or to prevent suspects from skipping town) for us to report crimes to authorities but there's still a legal process and often times doctors (with legal permission of course) can comment on cases in general terms without repercussions.

That being said, I'm not a lawyer, but I certainly maintain a healthier level of skepticism than "probably fake".

And no, dude, apparently in the context you provided literally meant "appears to be fake". That is literally what the "apparent" is derived from. To appear or be seen in some manner.
