I've got the double whammy of being a leftist in 70% right-wing Ohio and a nerd among rednecks. Fleshy friends is hard mode, especially without stuff like cyber cafes or arcades to serve as hang out points. Can't even think of local places outside of Walmart or Gamestop that'd sell stuff related to anime, either.

Same here. The majority of friends are gym buddies for both the wife and I. I did meet my wife in FFXI tho, so take that as you will.

just take college classes for fun, havent gone through a class where i haven't come away with at least 2 good friends. hell AG just went to italy on a study abroad and now he has a whole zoomer cohort of friends

I've met maybe 5 or 6 people from BG or FFXI IRL, don't consider any of them real friends. My IRL friends are a couple people from HS, a couple people from grad school, and a couple people from my old wine club, basically.

But I don't see any of them more often than once every couple months tops - parenting and moving to a "good school suburb" has been quite isolating socially. BG and Twitter and podcasts are genuinely quite useful at filling the void though!

i only infrequently talk to 2-3 people i played ffxi with....i talk to about 5 or 6 BG people all the time, some of them for 10+ years...theyre the real bros
