but no the issue isn't upsetting the Republican Party or some such silliness, the issue is that without exception when Dems have violated historical norms the Republicans have reacted by violating them in an even more egregious and amoral manner. and one can pretend like the Republicans would have anyway, but the truth is they didn't. they didn't reduce the judicial / secretarial appointment approval bar from 60 to 51 until Democrats did, and they have never packed the Supreme Court even when it legalized abortion, gay marriage, etc. they are a low and self-serving party but the extant traditionalism in their conservatism does, in certain avenues, prevent them from violating normative form.

the issue is one of utilitarian good. given the destructiveness of the present SCOTUS i'm not sure expanding the Court is inherently a worse option at this point, but if undertaken we at the least have to be honest with ourselves and understand Republicans will expand it in a more avaricious and ambitious manner the second they are able. the reaction will be unequal but opposite, and the size of SCOTUS will become another partisan battleground oscillating with party control. it is not a good option. but it may possibly be a less bad option than what we currently have with one of the worst SCOTII in history.

This isn't the winning strategy you think it is no matter how much you push the narrative. You know what the people you want votes from want. Don't say it's impossible. Don't hide behind the excuse it'd lose the mythical swing voter. Don't whine it isn't popular enough (with corporations, wink wink). Hell, revel in the potential of "owning the 'tives" when it turns out they lose support when the helpful things wind up helping them too. Reactionary Dem support of what the GOP is doing now is only going to go so far when it turns out trying to stop the bleeding isn't enough and the insistence to do nothing continues.

I say this tongue-in-cheek, but for all the moaning of fascism the right accuses of the left, I say to lean into it. Kill them with the kindness they so flagrantly lack. Jesus was a socialist, after all.

Probably more succinct than that would be "Things can get better if we do" versus "Things will get worse if we don't". Humans respond best to fear. It's instinctual. We evolved reason to avoid going extinct because of fear, but it's there for a purpose nonetheless.

I'm of the despondent/disillusioned generation where I really don't give a fuck anymore. The "Center" has shifted so far right, our "leftist" "liberal" leaders are centrist or even right wing when compared to most other countries. If the vote comes down between a douchebag or a turd then fuck you, neither get my vote because I can't honestly be bothered to drive to a voting both and waste my precious 15-20mins or more depending on line to cast a vote for someone who's not going to do shit. Will I volunteer my time to try to help out a actual liberal/leftist try to make waves locally? Hell yeah I will but glass is half full because I know it's not nearly enough in the long run.

We got too many old fucks and too many of these old fucks don't want to make any waves because it will upset their $$ backers.
