Notably, nothing on the Chevron deference case that people are freaking out about, still waiting on that ruling

I don't expect a full dismantling of Chevron... but fuck do people misapply Chevron as it is, so it likely needs some clarification.

SCOTUS accidentally posted the abortion opinion and...

What the fuck is getting slipped in the tea of the conservatives? Iowa is not going to win their case that would allow them to kill pregnant women.

Edit: it's just getting sent back, but the lower court ruling stands, which will allow abortions in medical emergencies.

Also, I used to have a healthy respect for Gorsuch as a jurist, but God damn has he had some fucking duds. Did not expect Barrett to be on his left. If they'd been killing Native American women, he probably would have replaced Progelor himself to argue the case.

Bribery is legal now, you just can't do it ahead of time.

I mean, the optics of them only allowing themselves to be bribed legally in public was getting pretty bad. They needed to make a move.

Feels maybe worse for politics than Citizen's United. It may not have more of an impact, but it is a lot closer to the everyman's definition of corruption and will give truth to the "all politicians are corrupt" and "the government is impotent" talking points that the right has been saying for decades.

When liberals have a supermajority, they move faster than public sentiment on civil rights issues.

When conservatives have a supermajority, they make it so you can have a nice quiet (no cellphones) dinner with an Exxon representative where they express that they will be $2mil grateful to you personally if you flip your vote on X. Shit is going to be a bloodbath.

Citizens allowed companies to buy elections. This will allow them to buy the politician they didn't back.

The right has skillfully crafted the government to match their long-standing claims. For over 20 years, they've insisted that the government is inefficient, corrupt, and incapable of serving the public. Gradually, they've enacted changes to reinforce this narrative, systematically reducing funding for various branches and enabling influential individuals to gain power which can then be bought. It's a remarkable achievement, albeit a profoundly disheartening one.

4 opinions today. So, term will stretch to July. I'm betting we are Chevron blasted and not get shit on Trump immunity.

Opinion 1: Grants pass v Johnson. Criminalizing homelessness is A-OK. Obvious ideological split.

Opinion 2/3: Chevron cases. Agencies do not have authority to assess or resolve ststutory issues, courts do. Opinion is not retroactive. Decisions previously involving the Chevron cases such as the Clean Air Act, will stand. SCOTUS apparently thinks the US has 5 million qualified judges to hear all the cases they are wanting to push on an already strained judicial system.

Opinion 4: Fischer v US. Jan 6 defendants. Court found the DC circuit used too broad a reading of the law. They are sending it back for a more narrow review to see if the case still meets the bar for prosecution.

Interestingly, Brown is the only Justice not to author an opinion on one of the April cases. The Trump immunity case is the only case left from April.

    Holy shit

Chevron is dead, so is Grants Pass.

The amount of evil rich people and corps are going to get away with because agencies are gutted from rulemaking and enforcing punishment for rulebreaking is going to be breathtaking.

This is the narrowed language the DC circuit must use to assess whether an indictment can stand for Jan 6 defendants.

"...alter, destroy, mutilate, or conceal a record, document, or other object, with the intent to impair the object's integrity or availability for use in an official proceeding."

Does Mike Pence count as an object?
