Yup, look at the student loan relief shit. People everywhere, even some on this forum, were against it because "i had to pay off my loan so it's only fair they have to as well" or "I didn't even get a degree because of loans, so why don't I just get free money?". We're all right where the wealthy want us, fighting over little scraps tossed to us and then refusing said scraps because not everyone can get a piece so no one should get anything! The court will hear a challenge from the ACLU to Trump's attempt to end birthright citizenship.

If birthright is stripped, technically, Don Jr, Eric, and Ivanka will no longer be citizens as their mother was not a citizen at their births.

i for one remain against it because it solves nothing for anyone going into college after the forgiveness(making it worse actually) and is funny enough quite the boomer rug pull move for those that are happy to have got theirs.

Only a few people here were against it, and every one of us basically said this exact thing.

I mean maybe but any solution should have massive forgiveness in any way. Honestly the real problem is that we've made higher education too essential to finding a job with a living wage.

I mean it should be both forgiveness AND reducing college costs but there's no way we're ever getting both in this country because then how would the higher ups have willing slaves they know will work crazy ass hours in order to try to put the smallest dent in their student loans as interest eats them alive? I'll take forgiveness over nothing though (which I thankfully got) and be 100% for everyone's loan to be forgiven whether they want to a scam school like I did or a "legit" school that just had absurd costs. Shouldn't be locked down to loans you took out when you were 17/18/19 thinking you needed a degree to get anywhere in life.

I love the complaint from boomers that it's not fair that they had to pay all of their school loans. But they never mention how cheap it was back then. They never mention it was their greedy generation that made everything more expensive.

it should be forgiveness and completely overhauling the college loan system and college tuition costs that are artificially inflated yes. and yes you should take forgiveness if offered cuz fuck it it's your life and you gotta do whats best for you. my issue is that only having the forgiveness part makes things greatly worse for all those coming after you. so to me at least i see the whole thing as: should some benefit at the cost of others, or should there be a focused outcry on fixing the root. i am however not burdened by loans and most of my social circle skews towards college-aged so i am biased. but im also biased cuz its a bandaid for some and spit and dirt rubbed into a cut for others done for nothing other than to get cheap voter appeal at the time.

I used to be an adjunct back at the community college here and would harp on all the cybersec students coming in on their 1st semester that if they thought they were gonna be working for the NSA or something like the college was marketing the program for, they needed to go get out of their classes right now. I never made my students get textbooks, even taught them how to pirate them and all my classes were openbook cuz that's a huge chunk of IT (actually knowing how to find shit). Entire system is a joke but it's also still a requirement in a lot of spots. My degree looks look on project proposals for the contracting company so they want everyone with degrees....but then also only give us fucking 5k a year for education expenses which in my doctorate is like 2 fucking classes lol.

Student loan forgiveness was kind of a weird intra-middle class divisive issue that never made sense as a policy. The best solution would have been to go back in time and not bring that shit up.

Poor people generally don't go to college and thus don't take out loans, but some do (rarely) and it can go poorly.
Some middle class people take out loans to go to college and have trouble repaying them for various reasons.
Other middle class people take out loans to go to college and repay them without major issue.
Rich people only take out loans if it makes financial sense (low interest rate) vs. other things they could use the money for, because they have the money to buy the education outright.

So, politically, loan forgiveness looks benevolent or stupid depending on the examples you pick. As fiscal policy, economists agree it is regressive. It was a dumb hill to try to climb, let alone die on.

Glad those of you who could benefit from it got the money. Better than another handout to corporate America. Still dumb policy, though.

Boomers were able to walk out of high school into a job they could work at and make a stable living and somehow ended up telling the next generation that this was a bad thing. It's incredibly sickening to me how they took that away from us and told us we're better off for it.

I firmly believe it's because it was like most boomer things just another grift. That's so 80s is basically how you describe this situation. Max out cards, look awesome, get an education and stuff but also it shouldn't be hard for you because reasons.

Wouldn't surprise me if I knew the college.

System is problematic, though CCs (at least in CA) are way better than most places which people don't realize.

    holy shit, lol

    I'm surprised for two reasons:
    1. They're less captured than I thought
    2. They're apparently unswayed by the fact that unwinding this is going to be a huge pain in the ass

I'll read a legal analysis of why they struck it down, but my guess is that they slapped his hand because his foreign policy / national security justifications was too flimsy. I bet they come up with a new justification and keep doing the policy, though.
