Armenia just declared the CSTO equivalent of Article 5 against Azerbaijan. If Russia doesn't back them up, the CSTO becomes a worthless piece of paper and Russia loses Armenia. If they do, there's suddenly a lot less they can use in Ukraine of the little they have left to begin with.

Russia has 2 million reservists it can call to mobilize. It simply hasn't called them yet. Don't act like there is no longer a Russian army over one offensive.

the CSTO is already mostly a worthless piece of paper. the organization entirely ignored the prior conflict as Armenia was getting its shit stomped by Azerbaijan's Turkey-derived NATO tech, and the regional conflict capable of invocation after that was the border clashes b e t w e e n member states Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. halfhearted Russian attempts to martial action a la NATO interventions have similarly failed, notably their 2017 effort to get anyone else to intervene in Syria with them.

the only thing it has ever actually done is deploy a handful of peacekeepers to Kazakhstan to function as riot police and bash some protestors for eight days (eight. days.). it is a toothless organization between Soviet successor autocracies that allows Russia the fiction it is a rival geopolitical locus to the West, and enables the unstable Eurasian and satellite states to curry favor from Mother Russia.

Any larger power does this to it's neighbors to ensure it's interests are dominant. It's not like other countries don't curry favor with it's neighbors. Look at relationship with the Mexico and US.

As far as the ability to mount a ground offensive Russia is probably crippled.

Don't think for a second they don't have other means they could conduct an offensive that would be both political and likely literal suicide.

Russia will assuredly be able to mount further offensives, if not at the tail end of this campaigning season then in Spring after the weather thaws the battlefield. they just likely won't be terribly effective, as none of the ones they've launched since April have been. a lot depends on how much farther the Kremlin is willing to go. so far they've avoided mass mobilization like the plague for fear of civilian blowback and are conserving their modern military stocks, but things can change.
