Little over 5 hours ago. Russia sent an Hypersonic Intercontinental ballistic missile at Ukraine in response to use of U.S., and British long range weapons.

The Ukrainian city of Dnipro became the first city in human history to be struck by an intercontinental ballistic missile. It is a historic turning point. An intercontinental ballistic missile used not on a firing range, but against a city of a million people.

Is anyone in the US getting this news ? Putin is having a press confrence right now explaining why Russia has done this.

A U.S. official told Reuters that it was notified by Russia that it was going to launch the missile ahead of time, and that the U.S. then briefed Ukraine and its close allies that it was being used.

Russia used a conventionally warhead instead of a Nuclear warhead. But it still packed quite the punch.

Probably more about proving to the world that they still have functioning ICBMs. They've been issuing explicit threats for ages, this just proves their credibility.

It's a dummy warhead anyway. They loaded really weak ordinance which did damage but basically said "hey, we can seriously hit targets. Imagine if this had a bigger payload".

In all seriousness though, launching an IRBM is an act of desperation to try and scare Europe, I think despite their best attempts to hide it, Russia's economy might be in far worse shape than anyone realises and when the floor goes from underneath it the whole lots going to fall apart very quickly. Makes little sense to try and scaremonger before Trump get's in the door unless the Vatnik shitheels are worried they're gonna run out of time at home. Economy goes to shit, supply chains go byebye, people riot and Ukraine win's by default by outlasting their attackers.

I don’t think we (the western world) necessarily want Russia to collapse in a citizen led uprising without having assets already in place to seize the worst of their nuclear/chemical arsenal because then that shit just ends up in the hands of terrorist organizations or our enemies willing to pay for them like China, Iran etc

Problem is that Russia as it is, is still an existential threat to Europe and the US. If Russia were to collapse and fragment it will never be able to threaten the rest of the world again. As for nukes, those have an expiry date too, if the trinium in them isnt replaced they eventually wont work. Honestly I wouldnt be surprised if the concern is more about China than nukes, if Russia were to disintegrate Xi might take the opportunity to expand into Eastern Russia and take back Outer Manchuria as a consolation prize instead of Taiwan.

china love the current economic state russia are in, they don't want anything to disrupt it. russia is currently selling china oil, gas, and other commodities at a ridiculously reduced rate so they can generate the immediate cash needed to sustain their war.

also by the end of 2024 china will have invested 160 billion into russian infrastructure, information technology, energy, mining and other stuff. russia isn't going anywhere. they're already an extension of china

Russia will be back on their feet soon once his loyal Orange Pet and followers lift all sanctions on them and stop giving Ukraine aid. I wouldn't be surprised if we started selling Russia weapons at this point.

This is exactly why I'm not banking on their current economic situation lasting and getting worse as they get further cut off from other countries. Sanctions will get lifted, Swift will open up its banks to Russia again and they will begin to recover. Businesses that pulled out will flock back in and Russia will continue its slow march across Ukraine soil claiming the desolate destroyed landscape as their own. Europe will continue to send strong letters of disagreement but wont actually do anything more than that, Britain will spew more steam than a kettle about how they should do something but actually wont get off their ass.

Regardless the condition their nuclear arms gambling, that they're de-funked and unmaintained isn't a gamble worth making if it kills everyone in the end by being wrong.
