Legitimately was curious. I don't—or at least I would like to imagine—that no one here would expect China to be stopping this Russian war. Least of all when they benefit from it. Cheaper oil, more economic ties and future agreements, and the south east of Russia is a tasty potential reward one day.

My ex (who is a white American) is from an upper-middle class family and joined the military when he turned 18 because his parents kicked him out the day he turned 18 when he told them he was gay. He wasn't exactly in a unique situation in the military, so I'd definitely say it's more about abject poverty. He chose the military because he felt like he had no other options. Granted, I suppose he was "poor" at the moment, but he still grew up upper-middle class with the privileges that comes with it.
