hitherto that's exactly what they've done, the EU has stood remarkably united despite the domestic price they've paid. much will depend on the severity of the winter but at the least they're being quite proactive about it and looking at everything possible they can do that doesn't involve lifting the sanctions. thus far whatever divisions exist within the EU is over how to combat the shortage, not whether or not to lift the sanctions.

Even if Russia wins the war, they've lost. Goliath (Russia) was supposed to stomp all over David (Ukraine), the fact the war is still ongoing and Russia has now resorted to forcing Russian civs to fight in their war is a loss.

There are riots over gas prices occuring all over Europe, and increasing. Look at France today. So support for Ukraine may have peaked. Winter favors the Russians, and that's why the Ukrainians need to capture as much as possible before the momentum slows and the Russians can breathe.

Which is exactly why news of the war being over by the summer would be good news. Most people are fine with retaining the sanctions for a bit longer, bit no one wants it to drag out for years.

Yes; people are complaining about the cost of electricity and gas, but not over the sanctions. People are well aware of the necessity of the sanctions. People want politicians to act and help out (be it with construction of new renewable energy sources or subsidizing the costs/lowering taxes), but I’ve heard VERY few people demanding that the sanctiona should be lifted.

Hell, we JUST had an election in Sweden, and not one person even considered lifting the sanctions as an option or even a question of importance. The discussion was all about how to minimize the impact of the sanctions, not the sanctions themselves.
