there's a lot of work being done under the assumption Viktor Bout won't be employed by Russian intelligence. the United States has used men like him to funnel arms to pariah regimes and Russian practices are little different. moreover he wasn't effective simply because he was charismatic and under the radar, he oversaw significant logistical efforts consisting of hundreds of people and dozens of planes delivering material to states with little infrastructure. i do not know if he will be so employed, i don't know if Moscow is more likely to utilize him, fete him, or keep him under close surveillance for the rest of his life. neither does anyone here. but i find it pollyannic to smugly sit around in a dick sucking ouroboros assured this man's capacity for harm is permanently and irrevocably elided because of the prison sentence.

However, the differences are that the Afghan government was part of that, they were swapped for the puppet Afghan government troops/assets, it was part of the peace deal, the US was leaving a war it shouldn't have still or perhaps ever been in, and there was no stopping the Taliban once the US pulled out.

there are dozens of examples of publicly known spies getting caught, being exchanged back to their former country, then not being able to return to any form of usefulness to the country or even being able to start a personal life after being returned

did you never hear about russian spy artem zinchenko? he had to flee russia because russia made plans of tossing him in prison, and probably executing him, a few years after his exchange. that shit isn't ancient history. just a few years ago

for the western world we value it's citizens, and will do pretty much whatever to get them back. military members? not as much.
