I wouldn't recommend it as a "first rpg"

Lots of reading, the game doesn't explain stuff like side quests, and the combat is a bit technical as the game progresses.

It's very much aimed at those experienced with JRPGs

Sorry for this bump, but this game came across my radar the other day and maybe a good "first rpg" for our almost 10 year old son. For those of you who played this: is it fun? Doesn't need to be ground breaking plot, just looking for a fun first experience

It's good, as is the first, but with what's come out this year I would say Super Mario RPG is a better first RPG experience.

Big step up. Dancer's arc is probably the weakest in my opinion. Scholar and Thief have been my two favorites so far, and both of them were really dark.

I feel like the quality of the stories in 1 was mostly generic but Primrose's was up there

Primrose had the best aye but the first was generally aggressively generic and aesthetically quite bad frequently, glad to hear the second is much improved. Mortismal over on youtube said it was his 2nd favorite game of the year (after BG3) and he's the RPG critic i most respect, also more a CRPG than JRPG guy so high praise.
